Injured Pigeon Stockton, CA USA!

Hello everyone,
I found a pigeon injured in the road near my parents house. It appears to have been attacked by a cat. Nothing much we could do but clean the injured wing. The wounds seem superficial. S/he seems to be alert and he drank water like he was in the desert! Just seeing if anyone is out here near Northern California that would be interested in helping out this little guy in the long term.

Derek

Do you happen to have any unused prescriptions of antibiotics on hand?
The pigeon should ideally have Clavamox (Augmentin for humans) or Doxyclycline and Metronidazole combination (also used for cat bites specifically
and in general for animal bites). Let's see who's in your area or close by to you
in terms of being able to take over and help.

ok!

Well we do have a resident pharmacist on hand (girlfriend) so hopefully she can cycle through my parents medications to see if we have any to spare. Thanks for all the info, definitely going through the list.

The wildlife center in Sacramento will take and care for pigeons. We also have a member that doesn't get on the board very often anymore who is in Modesto. I will see if I can contact our member in Modesto, but if you are able to take the bird to Sacto, that should be a sure bet (though I would call them first).

Great!

I actually live in Sacramento! Just vising my parents for the weekend. So if you can give me the number of the Sacramento Branch (if you know it off the top of your head); otherwise, I will go look them up myself! Thanks a ton!

Question

I am not sure if the pigeon is eating. I am sure its in shock/pain but he seems to drink tons of water. Any ideas? Should I not try to feed it? I am feeding it generic food for parrot/parakeets

Another problem =/

The wildlife care place in Sacramento is permanently closed for the time being. The phone number you have on that list you gave me earlier is incorrect, for future reference. There were bird rehabilitators but none of them stated that they would take care of pigeons... just about every other type of bird. Poor pigeon! At worst, I wouldn't mine caring for myself. Just wanted to find the best place to care. Oh well. "Claude" as I have named him will just have to be patient!

Uh, oh....well Terry was going to try and contact our other member close
to you. Are you able to get either of the two recommended med combo's
for cat bites?? If there aren't any broken bones, the worst case scenario would
be giving it a course of meds and waiting for the wounds to heal and then
releasing it in the area you found it in hopefully when other pigeons are present
for this one to join. Is this a possibility??

Closest

Closest thing I could find was the Polysporin. Other than just peroxide (if that is usable). I used warm water so far.

Sorry about the wildlife center. It looks like their website is no longer also. I've left a message for Marian. Hopefully she check this thread soon.

Well, the bird needs oral/systemic antibiotics for animal/cat bites. If Marion
is unable to help, there are a few other alternatives. Here's a link to Ohlone
Wildlife Rehabilitators:

http://www.ohlonehumanesociety.org/

Not sure the precise cut off point for taking pigeons in, though I think they
continue to accept pigeons during October.

Also, sometimes Avian vets will take in pigeons if you sign them over to them
and release for care. So you might want to check this link and see if there are any avian vets close by, call and see if this is an option:

I just PM'ed Derek a possible rehab contact in Sacto. Hopefully that will work out. Here is a link to all the permitted wildlife rehab facilities in California: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/rehab/facilities.html
