Spreading the loveMy 4-H leader has this dream of getting more kids interested in the hobby of keeping pigeons.
Today we went to a show. I had four birds, but everybody is molting and I did not expect much. Mine were actually some of the cleanest and best conditioned birds at the show. However the judge did not like my most promising young Frillback and really ripped the poor baby apart with his comments. I do not know if he realised that this baby has only been out of the nest for a week or two tops. Oh well, can't win them all! And there was no competition whatsoever. My two were the only Frillbacks, and there was only one other person showing Capuchines. Of course I brought a YC and an OC, and the other person brought a YH and an OH. Instead of putting the four birds in one class they just gave them all 1st places and didn't even rate them. *sigh*Anyway... today at this show we did some networking. We were hoping to get a few pigeons donated or on loan for a display at our 4-H fair, and maybe let a few of the kids take the birds home at the end once they prove that they have the resources to care for them. I will be doing several demonstrations at the fair and at other clubs' meetings in the near future. We expected to come home with a pair or two. However... These people REALLY love to help kids get into the hobby! We brought home two black owl hens, one mealy owl cock, one yellow pouter, one grizzle mookee cock, one blue bar mookee hen, and an andalusian russian tumbler. Have been promised an almond roller cock, a kite roller hen, a pair of turbits, and a pair of helmets. Also a few fanciers offered to bring birds simply for display, including a parlor roller! Birds are currently in cages in my tack room, they are on a broad spectrum antibiotic, will be wormed, treated for any external parasites, then get them on some probois and really good feed so that they are healthy for the kids. Can't wait for the fair!

What an excellent response from the other fanciers! I know the juniors will really enjoy the donated birds.
You mentioned treating with a broad spectrum antibiotic. Have you commonly experienced bacteria infections with new birds? I notice you didn't give anything for trichomonas. I would have thought that you'd want to knock down the trich load prior to them going into a new home.

Sorry I forgot to mention the canker meds... it is mixed in with the antibiotic. It is a five in one type of thing that my 4-H leader supplied. I will have to check and see what it is called... its not cheap stuff...

Took some pictures of the new birds when I went up to clean cages and put new flower pots down (for perching). Enjoy!

UPDATE Did I get your attention? Ok... the 4-H Fair went VERY well. We gave several demos with the Parlor Roller. Walked around with the King, who was VERY calm and gentle, to get kids to come look at the birds. The pair of owls, the extra owl hen, and the pouter cock all found homes during the show. The pair of mookies are also spoken for but have not been picked up yet. There was interest expressed for the almond/kite pair of Burmingham Rollers, but have not heard back if the kid is for sure taking them, so for now the pair is going back to Link. It was sooo much fun, and I won Poultry Showmanship haha. ![]()
