I believe your correct most "white homing pigeons" come from "racing stock" and are used in the "White bird release business" some are better than others as in most things, when you say "garden pigeons" are you talking about wild pigeons? if so it may be that those birds don't have the homing ability that is breed for in the first place, or possibly young birds lost in training being pushed too fast by an "eager beaver"! Now be careful because all white birds are not "homing pigeons" like the "white doves" which are useless for homing ability used more for looking at in a cage! Bottom line "homing pigeons" are "racing pigeons" with different abilities, some are fast, some are slow, some are very fast, some are very slow, but all still come home in their own time!

White garden Homers as i under stand them are homing pigeons but they are more for like a dovecote thing which is like a pole cote in a garden, more for looks. that is why they are used in white dove releases. most people call the white doves doves, but if they are released and come back they are white homers. I have heard though that hawks are more attracted to white pigeons so if you are going to race, i would get blue bar or some other color, but for just a hobby and pleasure go with white. I have white homers.
