Bad henHow long does everyone wait to get a pair of birds to pair up? I have a 2005 hen that refuses to pair up no matter what cock bird I put her with. She is very well bred and I want to see if she can produce winners but she wont pair up with any cock birds. I know she is a hen cause I got eggs from her with her old mate who is no longer here.

Maybe she's grieving her old mate that isn't there any longer.

I am having a bit of the same issues right now with my new pairings. Have you tried putting her in one of your individual pens and used lights to try and spur her interests. I had a few hens just mate right up. and some are just sitting there looking at each other. You may try isolating her for a day or two and then re-introducing her to the cock bird you want her with. Try a little mini-widowhood thing.
Good Luck Randy

I used to have this hen that don't like any of my cocks except the strongest, yet mated cock. I think some hen have strong preferences for something. Maybe your hen believes that your other cocks are not as good as her previous mate. My hen wing slapped other males that doesn't interest her!

Yeah there is a whole lot of wing slapping going on in that pen. I tried her with 2 different cocks so far and no luck. She is currently on 18 hrs of light and has been on vitamins A D E for 5 days. After paying 400.00 for her she better get busy real quick or we are going to have to get the pigeon porn out.

If you paid that much, maybe she is a high roller. Maybe she wants a cock that cost $1000 or more. Such hens do exist you know!
Or maybe your hen is heartbroken. You will probably have to wait. Her mojo went somewhere. I can't think of a substance that can excite her. |

Cock has been gone for 7 months. Got rid of him. She is just real fiestey. She isnt in mourning I dont think. Been with a GFL cock that is more money than her and that still aint good enough. I will keep her locked in with him for another 2 weeks if that dont work then we will just have to sell her and put one of the cheap (easy
) hens in there. |

If you want her to pair up with someone you like her to mate, then you have to separate her to where she's the only one in it meaning not even a coo of another pigeon she don't hear...Let her stay there for about a week or 2 or you can let any cock that you want her to mate go in there by himself and do the same process let him stay there for awhile then put her with him...I can guarantee to you that he will be so active/excited to see another pigeon specially a hen
, WHAT! she be in a lot of trouble when he sees her...That's why they call it prisoners, to contain them somewhere that there is no one but them either cock or hen...

I have a 2005 hen that did the same thing. for a year I had her in the breeding coop tried to pair he up with cocks that I thought she'd be good with nothing. She acted like she was to young for breeding. Never made any sign of aggression nothing. I got the ugliest homer from a friend a saddle back bird I didnt want to breed him but it seemed as soon as I put him in the loft It was love at first site lol. I also have two Beautiful reds that are going broke back mountain on me so I had to name them Jake gyllenhal and heath ledger lol....

It's true that there is some behavioral issue involved. I also had a hen that wouldn't accept the advances of any male, and finally she did accept the advances of a male I moved from another coop. It rarely happens, but sometimes the ATTRACTION is not there. It is involved in the courtship process. The hen is the bird that decides whether it's a go or no go, and usually it isn't a problem.
You can also see if she is not in the mood, give her some vitamin e caps,200 IU one a day for a few days and see if that helps. You should also make sure she is getting enough protein in the diet, two weeks before mating, as it stimulates the sex drive. Barley ration should be reduced and legumes increased gradually.

Im by far no expert on this but one time I also had a hen like this one that you have and I will tell you what I did and cant garentee it will work for you but it seems to always work for me ... First you put the hen with the cock you want her to mate up with for say 7 days (as long as they arent killing each other that is) then the next week you put her with another cock for say 5 or 6 days ... then on the 7th day you put her back with the first cock and I know it sounds strange but they usually hook right up..couldnt hurt to try
