Begginner Here, bloodline question....

Hi folks, this site is great! i am interested in getting into racing pigeons. I have contacted a few people who have birds, but am not sure yet what to get for birds. i have found several sites saying that most breeders are willing to help newbies by giving them birds free or for cheap and have found neither:-) i had one breeder offer me to banded pair for 100, or unbanded late hatched breeders for 20 per bird. the guy seems straight up, and after looking at his site seems to be reputable and successful in the sport. i know a lot depends on the specific genetics, but would birds for either of those prices be a good deal? would i have offspring in time for yb season? i'm in virginia, any advice or referals for quality birds priced reasonably?
thanks in advance guys....i wouldn't mind advice on building a loft economically if you have any....thanks again.

Aaron,

I would find the nearest racing pigeon club and call the president or another officer. Tell them you're a starter and ask if you can visit their loft or other club members' lofts. Then you can get some ideas on loft design.

I would advise you to go slow on getting race birds. In fact, it might be the last thing you do after you build your loft. In the meantime, read all that you can. There is a ton of good information on this site and other internet sites.

Here's the link to find the nearest club (lower right corner):

Take you time and it will pay rewards down the road. Good luck.

Bruce

Then there was the confused chimp at the zoo. He was reading the Bible and Darwin's Origin of the Species. Couldn't figure out if he was his brother's keeper or his keeper's brother.

Bruce is right try to contact the nearest club. And they should offere you good advice. And yes they may even offer up some startere birds. If you get your loft built soon Yes you could raise some flyers for this youg bird season. The person you spoke to may have very well reduced his normal price down to assist you in getting some of his birds. But do check the nearset club to find info and geeting a start. Good luck wecome to the sport of pigeons.

Cool

Blood Lines

Bruce and Robert are 100 % correct. Build the loft and find some local flyers first. A book could be written on how to acquire your first birds. You need help from some local flyers who are interested in helping a new guy get started.
