clipping breeders

i was wondering how many of you clip the wings on your breeders so they can't fly out of your breeding cages my breeding cages are outside and don't want to chance a bird getting loose

I do not clip wings, but some do it to their pet house pigeons as they feel it is their best interest for safety when out in the house...they say the birds can still fly some though. so if you did you may beable to catch it with some effort. I would use it as a last resort, but this is just my opinon...I just feel it is like hanicaping them and I would be very unhappy if someone cut something off me so I could not get around. but maybe someone will post that say they have benefited from doing it.

I only have one prisoner bird and I don't clip her wings. I would feel terrible if she got out and wasn't able to fly in case she had the instinct to return to my loft. She would be alone at the mercy of any predators.

I don't clip feathers, I get some yarn or wool and i tie all the feathers they use to fly on each wing. This way they can go out, flutter, not fly around. And then when it's time to go into the loft, i just open the strings. They don't seem to mind. But thing is, i have a 6ft by 6ft by 6ft loft. Once all my breeders have been paired, and their eggs have been released, i let them out of the breeding boxes and they're able to do what ever they feel like.

I think you need to re-evaluate/rebuild your breeder area.

These birds are raising your next set of flyers and they should have access to a breeding area of their own, within the loft-where they CAN fly. They should have access to sunlight, bathing areas within the confines of their loft.
Excercise is extremely important to their overall health and well being, don't clip their feathers.

Happy and healthy, (stress free) breeders make happy and healthy babies.

Best not to clip

They are completely defenseless if they cannot fly. Not only that but clipping to lead to broken feathers and infections. I would not recommend it for any pigeon.
