Eleanor Roosevelt School Racing Pigeon Project

The Eleanor Roosevelt School Racing Pigeon Project makes the news, I think that it turned out to be quite a positive article for all of us and providing an understanding of our feathered friends.

Tulare Advance Register Pigeon Project Article

I hope that you all enjoy it, this is one of my pet projects.

Hi Ellen,

That's absolutely wonderful! This is something very positive for kids these days. It also relates to the thread about why parents let their kids kick pigeons. Children need to start with animals when they're young to foster any inert love of them. As we all know, many of us here on the board developed a love for pigeons when we were quite small. Kids these days need to take a break once in awhile from computers, cell phones and technology in general and get back into simpler aspects of life, such as animals and nature. I think what you are doing is really great and hopefully it will change a lot of attitudes and thinking. Well done!!!

Brad,

I could not do this without the support of my fellow pigeon fanciers, I can't take the credit of this by myself that is for sure. All of the pigeon supply houses also contributed to the project as well with medications, vitamins, an electronic clock, books and so much more.

But I can see it is time to figure out a new fund raiser for the projects from what I read the teacher has stated....

Suggestions are welcome....

I need some of these futurity races to start making a donation to the schools I think.

Hi Ellen,

This is a very creative and rewarding way to change attitudes at an early age,
where it counts. What a great way to give back to the local community and
the pigeon community as well. Good for you!

Ellen,

What a wonderful article...I am sure this project was instrumental in helping to change many of the negative attitudes the children, their parents and the community might have harbored toward pigeons.
Great work!

Good education for youth and adult alike. You said you may need more ways to support the program. How about fixing up a breif story on what is being done and how it is impacting the youth. Send it to several racing homer breeders And see if they might donate auction birds for a auction to suport the program. I bet several would respond kindly to this. And Perhaps you could contact the world of wings to list the auction birds for you with no sir charge. I believe Randy Goodpasture there could be of help. Might just work out.

Elvis,

While some may, for the most part they will grow up with a different understanding of pigeons and we can hope that they will pass on the knowledge to other generations and make this a better place for our feathered friends. What they learn will give them a feeling for all feathered creatures and should the opportunity arrise for them to help a injured or fallen little one they will assist, or if they see other's mistreating innocent creatures they will make them stop. I can say the younger ones are very interested and the older they get the less interested they seem to be, but they still share in the moments so it is touching all age groups in one way or another at the school as well as giving the adults and staff a little better understanding. This has been a tough project for me because none of the persons at the school had any knowledge of pigeons so it was from the startup of teaching to today where they are competing, it has been a lot of fun and the pictures make it all worth it.

Hi,

i was wondering do you plan on doing this again?

If you could get other lofts to do the same...and educate more and more schools, more and more childern would learn.

or that 4H program but for pigeons. ive heard of it happening here in this city, they give a pigeon and you take care of it they teach you.

What you have done is very good, you brought awareness. The kids dont have to grow up to participate in a somewhat dieing sport but at least apreciate and treat the pigeons well ...wether on the street or in a show.
