First hawk attack

Wow what an eye opening refresher to the danger of hawks. This morning I let out my 3 young white birds to fly with an 07 lost racer I rescued. She loft flew with them and then took off out of sight. I assumed she was on her way home. I was outside playing with one of my dogs and I saw her fly by really fast. She kept circling then hit the house roof quickly. I whistled and she flew to the board. Just as she did that a coopers dove out of a nearby pine and right as he was about to get her she trapped. I was afraid she was going to fly off and that would be the end of her.

He must have followed her home and sat in wait. I have the bobs closed up and now am going to take a few days off from flying. Luckily for me she seems to have had experience in such dangers.

It sure ain't pretty is it? That's something that will get your heart pumping really good early in the morning.
We let our YB's out this AM, but no hawks to be seen. We've seen one fly over the past few days, but so far he hasn't bothered the birds.
Glad you're little gal was smart enough to get her little fuzzy butt inside!!

Yea I knew it just seemed to good to be true to fly this long with no incidents. At least there were no first timers out there. I think I will do some tosses and not so much loft flying, to keep down the attention.

The hawks will follow your birds home for a short distance. Our race birds came in one day a couple of years ago with a hawk on their tails. They must have picked him up down the road, because they were our first birds home and none of the others had been out that day. I have to say, I've never seen our birds hit the loft and trap as fast as they did that day. However, we still didn't win the race, but Mr. Hawk stayed hungry.

The hawk still stayed hungry. Kind of a mixed blessing I guess

At least they understand they are safe inside.

Does anyone know if pigeons are usually taken from tosses or shorter races. I would think with them flying over the tree tops they could see and avoid any hawks easily. It seems that when they fly low or about to land that they are taken the most.
