first Hawk issue suspectedWEIRD.
I have been flying my birds every day for extended periods of time allll summer without so much as a single hawk sighting, but yesterday they were let out a 3 and my old blue grizzle hen, who is currently on 10 day old chicks, has come up missing! no signs of an attack on the property, but i can't think of anything else that could have happened to her. she has a strong mothering instinct, she has fostered chicks for me several times, can't imagine her taking off while she's on chicks. anyone had this happen? sound hawkish? hawk bastards. |

Thats so sad to think about, poor mummy pigeon.
If mum doesn't come back are you going to be able to foster the chick with another pigeon?I do hope she turns up. ![]()

so far the daddy bird is feeding the chicks, luckily we don't have cold temps to worry about. i don't have any other old birds so if the daddy fails i'll tube them.

could be wires?Quote:
i have a team of 9 YBs that are quick on a 40 mile toss. i lost 3 of them simply on loft flying and i suspect they've been hitting the wires for one day one of them came late with an open wound on the chest. if her injury was caused by a hawk attack there could have been more punctured wounds from the talons. kalapati San Diego http://loftdekalapati.mypets.ws:81/Jview.htm |

I had a bird shot on a training toss last year. Fortunately a kind family contacted me and I picked him up. He recovered with the bird shot still in there (treated him with antibiotics) and he's still flying!:

Dove season hera opens the first of sept. NOW any body tossing birds OR racing. I would say there birds might get shot. Why if the birds go to water And a dove hunter is there He may just decide a pigeon will is like a dove. It is not a good time the 1st week of dove season for training or racing. BUT also for over a month dove season can get a few pigeons. First week the most. One never knows what happens when a bird does make it home
