Fog is where you get most of your powerline injuries. Although good homers should be able to navigate through fog, it is much more safe and fair for the bird if you wait until it is lifted.

Our combine had a race a couple of months back and there were reports that the birds met fog on the way home. The release was around 9am, and was nice and sunny with little wind. It was a longer race then usual and some did not return until the next day. So, to answer the question, IMO, they can navigate in the fog, but it will take longer.

I asked about doing a training toss on a foggy morn, and from a good flyer, she said to wait till it cleared, but if it comes on them when flying home from a race and it was unforseen then...guess you just have to cross your fingers, not much you can do but hope and wait.

I have trained in the fog before with great results. Fast returns and 100 percent back.

I do not race, so Im not on a tight training schedule, so I like to give every opportunity for them to succeed and not hinder them. I do let them loft fly in the rain, not a storm, but a drizzle, I guess it may help if they every came across a stray shower on a toss.

One thing about fog everyone is forgetting. It lies low to the ground and it is usually local. So a bird can fly above it or around it. Fog is only an issue when it is around the loft. Even the release point is only an issue until they get above it or threw it.

Remember the study that was done were they operated on the eyes of the birds and made them blind and tossed them from 100 miles? Some of them were hitting the landing board and landing around the loft. I think a good pigeon will not be bothered by the fog. JMO
