Funny looking.........

I just found this picture. It's a picture of a racing homer that a member in our combine had a few years ago. He's now had to get rid of all of his birds, but we used to go get our feed from him and I remember seeing this picture hanging in his garage. I never knew it was on the web though.

What I find interesting about the photo, is it demonstrates the ability of our pigeons to come up with mutations. With racing pigeons, the hope or dream is that some special mutation will occur which will enhance the racing ability of our birds. I remember locally, a fancier developed a line of pigeons which had 11 flight feathers instead of 10. This created a bunch of excitement and speculation about racing possibilities. If it really would have worked out of course, then all pigeons in the USA would now have 11 flight feathers....but apparently it did not seriously impact racing ability.......

Nah.......I've got a bird with 11 flights. She ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer if ya know what I mean. However, she sure is something to look at and she ALWAYS comes home. Not in a big hurry to do so, but she always makes it. That 11th flight might be a disadvantage.

Sb

in 1952 W.F.HOLLANDER raised a squab that had peculiar face feathering. He named it sideburns and gave it the genetic symbol Sb.This bird was a Homer / King crossthe expression of this mutant is variable,it may also include the ear feathers. In any event that is what we have here a homer/king cross with the sideburn gene. .GEORGE
