hatching eggs

Question...i have a chick that was just born this afternoon...the other egg has no sign of the chick breaking through.

Up to now, everytime i checked eggs and there was a hatched chick, there has been a sign of the other chick at least starting to break the shell.

Should I be concerned?

No need to be concerned........either it hatches or it don't. Sometimes the eggs will hatch a day apart, so just keep watching it. If it doesn't hatch in a couple of days, it's probably not going to. May be a dud. Did you candle the eggs?

My experience has been that the eggs will usually hatch a day apart. That being said, every pair of eggs that I have hatched this year have all hatched the same day. Go figure.

Varies from pair to pair

Some pairs tend to sit tighter than others, once the first egg is laid. This will make for one hatching a day or so before the other. If they ignore the first egg until the second is laid, they will hatch much closer together.

It's an 18 day incubation, give or take a few hours. Warmer temps can hurry it up alittle, cooler temps can slow it down alittle.

First feeding after hatching?

How long after hatching do the parents feed the newborn chicks? I've never been able to see them feed the newborns until a few days lter.

Do newborns have some type of reserve energy source for a period of time?

They absorb the egg yolk. I believe the parents feed them with in a few hours after hatching. Not sure how long "a few hours" is........I'd guess and say 2 maybe? I've never actually seen a baby hatch and then paid any attention to when it got it's first meal.

Say 5 days as some you will notice in 3 others 5 to 6. Depends how tight the birds sit the eggs.

I would say three days from the day that the second egg was laid! This is a very important thing to do if you don't want to waste time with birds sitting on infertile eggs! If you notice after the first egg is laid that it is being sat on too much switch it out with a wooden egg until the second egg is laid, this will help with the youngsters hatching out on the same day!
