i don't just go out, and fly one, I fly a group of them right?

To fly pigeons, do I need to fly a group of them, or would one be fine?

(to better understand the next question asked, you'd need to know a tiny bit about falconry, and realise how the birds of prey fly.)

Can I say go into an open feild somewhere and fly them, but have them come back to me rather, thango back home? Or do they always fly back home?

It is better to train and fly in a group, as they are safer in numbers. They warn each other also, of impending danger. It is also easier to train them in groups as they learn from each other, it is kind of like a classroom environment.

If you take them out in a vacant field they will fly home, if they are 'homing" pigeons. That has been my experience when doing a training toss.

Thats what I had thought, but it is still fun to post newbie questions as
1. It'll help me know things for certain
and
2. Anyone who might wonder about the same thing, will be able to figure it out quite easily.

Please feel free to ask any questions you have, that is how you learn.

Check out the "pigeons for sport" forum and there you may also find out some answers as far as training youngsters.

It will always fly "home" as Treesa says and not back to you. But you could fly one pigeon - I did for a while - but in a group they always come home quicker and are safer. Good luck

Are you flying them for the fun of it, or in preparation for racing?

If for fun - any number together is fine. If for racing, many 'trainers' prefer to first release them all together - or in two groups, about 20 minutes apart(we prefer in two groups at first -- if a hawk should attack one of the groups, then you've only got 1/2 your birds scattered all over - the 2nd group usually gets left alone for some reason).

Once the birds are returning well from 40-50 miles, time permitting, we go to releasing in groups of 3, 15-20 minutes apart.
