Just my luck

Had 4 young birds get out for the first time today and hang out on the roof of the loft for a hour....spent the whole time trying to get them back in,
and just before dark they took off and dissapeared into the sunset....

What do you think my chances are of seeing them again?

I think they will be back at first light.

Chances are very good they will be back in the morning, or in the next few days. Try not to worry too much. I hope they make it back safe and sound.

so how dark was it when your birds flew off ?? fly offs really do suck when its a later time of night cuz they can easily lose their bearings when flying in the dark being that young ..I tend to like to let my youngins out in the mornings on their first time out cuz that gives them all day long to figure out their surrounds be it from a tree or some other place... it seems that landing on the roof of the coop to them can be the hardest thing for some young birds but after they I never have a problem ..hope yours find their way back but if you see any flying around you should let the one that made it back out to help luer them back to your loft even if it just sits on the roof that will help ..good luck
