measuring distances


Hi,i'm new to training pigeons,for racing.Question,how do you measure your miles ,for training.Like one mile ,two miles,five miles,on out to twenty,and so on.Thanks for any help,you can give.

Hi White Birdman.........guess your question got overlooked. Not sure exactly what you are asking, but some folks use a map and draw a line from their loft to the first race station. That will give you a general direction in which your birds may fly on race day. Then you just figure out where a mile on that line is from your house, then 2 miles, 5 miles, etc. Doesn't have to be exact of course as you need to find a suitable release place, so if it works out to be 1 1/2 miles or 3/4 of a mile, that's ok.
OR, if you have a gps unit you can use that. We've got one but I don't know how to use it. I can get the coordinates of where I release the birds, but that's about it. A GPS unit can do lots of other things I think. I just don't know what.

Thanks for the reply Lovebirds,i was thinking GPS ,but i'm like you don't know how to use one.I wish i could find one that was simple to use.All i want it to do is tell me ,how far i am from home,so i can tell ,my distances.

Have you ever seen the program "Streets and Trips" by Microsoft? It's an excellent program to figure out where you need to go with your birds and is easy to use.
