My @ Homers Pairing question.

As some of you know i just got my 2 homers 3 days ago. Its a male about 4 years old, and a hen 2 years old. They have been in the new shed for 2 days. The first 2 days they slept in different boxes even though i would put them together in one box before i went to sleep, the hen would jump out sometime after i left and stay in a different box. But today before i went to work at 4pm i put them together again in one box. Then after i got home at 11:30 i check on them and they were still in the same box. Does this mean they are a pair now and mating? I will check on them in the morning, to see if they are still in the same box together.

Maybe not mating yet, but they have started to like each other now anyways. lol If they are in the box together today I would call a pair!

Good Luck with your new birds.

watch them for a bit
if you see them "kissing" and the male cooing and so on and the female doesnt mind or try to get away
I would call them a pair
thats what my birds did

I think you just need to give them some time and they will do the rest ,no need to rush them they know what they are doing lol being that there is only the 2 of them its not like they have to fight over a mate so no need to lock them in a box together.

One fact of life regarding pigeons, is that they do not need a bunch of supervision to figure out what to do in this matter........leave them alone, and let nature take her course, she won't need any "help" from you. As a pratical matter however, they have only moved into their home a few days ago, and it will take some time before they feel comfortable enough with thier new surrondings, before they decide to set up house, and getting down to business. Also, depending on where you are located, this is not typically the time of year where nature tells them to start nest building and raising a family. For many parts of the USA, at this time of year, the sexes are seperated at this time of year, and in the good ole days, only put together in Febuary.

my youg homers a few months ago were mating and nest buliding and laying eggs like busy little bees, but now they have settled down and not thinking about it as much, it's winter. I have even got some new pairs of fancy pigeons and it took them about three weeks to settle and make a nest and lay, it still did'nt seem like their heart was in it, let mother nature do it's thing and stay out of it...

Then the best thing you could do is put a light in there on a timer so the birds get at least 14 hours of day light. I keep my breeders on 16 hours of light to restart their sex drive and it is in the teens here with a high today of 22.

well if you don't race birds, your best bet is to not have babies in the dead of winter anyway, they stop sitting on the babies at about 12 days old, so I think where you live it does get cold and the baby may get chilled.....

I have to agree with you SW. I see absolutely no reason to use lights and trickery to get pigeons to mate just simply because you WANT them too......it isn't natural and it isn't easy on the birds or the babies. I don't recommend this at all for pet pigeons.
Leave them alone and let them do things naturally.

On Febuary 14th...Valentines Day !!!....Many pigeon guys put their pairs together for the start of breeding season...Just like the man said, turn on the lights for 2 to 3 hrs of extra daylight starting 7 to 10 days before you let the boys and girls into the same section of your loft...By the way..Stand back and don`t get trampled when you open the door and let the boys and girls set up housekeping...hahaha !!!....Alamo

Thats nice, you need to get some wooden or fake eggs, to replace the ones she may lay, like before....helloooo, not good to have babies in the middle of winter, wait till spring.....do you understand that?

If you let them ley now the young will be wanting to mate when the season starts. If you put them together in March the young will be ready to race when the young bird season starts.
