There are a bunch of sticky info in most topics. I was on this site for six months gathering information before I joined. But starting out is always a leaning experience for experience is the great teacher. I made a few mistakes along the way, but I made fewer because of this site. It has also helped me with injured birds, spayed legs, and loose screws in front of keyboard. I wonder how many more mistakes I would have made without the good people on this site's help? Plus with so many types of pigeons and so many ways to show, fly, test, train, and enjoy them it would be hard to put that in one forum. I am thankful for all the help along the way and enjoy watching the newbes grow and learn just as I did. Plus I am still learning.
God Bless, Tony

I found this site when I lost a couple of youngsters.
They were fine and then I noticed their beaks were starting to look crooked, then trouble breathing and couldn't eat. I had them checked by 3 vets, one being an avian vet. All 3 said to treat with Baytril. I did, and they died ![]() I wanted to get to the bottom of it and find out what was happening, so I researched and found Pigeon Talk. I also found out on PT, that my birds had CANKER and it was treated with metronidazole!!.......Another youngster was showing the same symptoms, I looked down his throat and found the 'big yellow growth' that everyone described, so I looked up the dose, HERE on PT, and started popping metronidazole down his throat. On day 2 of treatment, that yellow growth popped right out of his mouth!! I lost too many birds in the past using the 'avian vets' in MY area..........What avian vet doesn't know how to treat canker?!! That did it for me ![]() This whole site has a wealth of knowledge, so now I can pretty much diagnose and treat myself, AND my birds are much healthier. I have been intimidated a couple of times by 'not so nice' people, BUT, as a whole, MOST of the members are extremely friendly and helpful. When your new at a site, it is easy to be intimidated. What helped me get past that, was other members jumping in and standing up to the 'inappropriate' comments. That really helped ease the fear of asking questions. I am grateful that this is a NO 'BS' forum, and if we continue to police ourselves, the new members should feel at ease to ask anything. I still learn everyday!!

I too joined this forum for all the good information it contains. I also dont do alot of posting but I'm on here about every Saturday & Sunday reading the posts and the variety of ideas that are shared . I must say that PT has probably saved me alot of money I would have spent on books. At first like most beginners I didnt always understand what was being said but just like anything else if you keep reading then the understanding comes.
Its very true that being new can be a little intimidating if your going to post a question because no one wants to ask a stupid question but all in all the people on here are pretty respectful. I for one consider this forum a valuable tool to advance my hobby forward and a source to keep me updated on the latest information. Rabbit |

I think it is a good idea. We have a place for racers, fancies, lofts, why not beginners.

For the first fifty years in this sport, you are a beginner anyway....and even those with considerable more yerars of experience then that, many of them have simply been doing it wrong for the last thrity years, and so they are still beginners, but they don't know it. So, I am thinking, don't be afraid to do some of your own homework, and doing some of your own research. Which means get yourself some books, some DVD's, and start reading the old threads. What I have found, is that somewhere within an 18 to 36 month timeframe, your typical begginer fancier will turn, in his own mind, from a novice into an expert. At that point, they are no longer teachable, and like a teenager, they will know everything. I have seen this happen within our own club. So, if we did happen to convince the owners of this site to expend the money to purchase bandwidth for a special "Begginers Corner", I suspect the only ones who would hang out there, would be the begginers, and those begginers who now after a year of on the job training, will consider themselves qualified to teach. And thus for the most part, you will have the blind leading the blind. |

It's JMO (just my opinion), but I think beginners of all stages should be welcome to post in any of the forums. This is a friendly and helpful discussion board, so I expect all the members to be helpful to anyone who asks a question and to provide them with the best answer you have to their question(s).
As a moderator here, I'm going to say that for now, there won't be a new forum for beginners as I don't see the need for it nor can the existing moderator staff be expected to take on another forum that would be exceedingly needful of responses. Terry |

Here's some thoughts for the administrator's of this forum. The web is full of forums on every subject you can imagine. These forums besides being a wealth of info are also "Social Networking forums. As an absolute new person to this activity, I have really enjoyed being a part of these discussions for the last several months. I've gained really valuable info in every direction. You're correct to state that if you search the forum you will indeed find probably every drop of info a new person could ever need. One of the things beyond the info has been the opportunity to interact with fanciers of every level. If I hadn't been so stuck on the hobby I probably wouldn't have bothered to search the site as I have.
When making decisions as to the future direction of the forum I would suggest that you do add a "Beginners section" if not for the info then for us beginners to have a haven to meet and learn from each other. |

when i first found this forum i did not have any birds. i found it because i was trying to get some feral pigeons out of the factory i work at humanely.
i became very interested and now have a loft with racing pigeons. i did not post in the first 4 months because i was busy reading the wealth of info on this forum. its great i think a beginner forum would be nice just for people to intoduce themselves. after that they can do a search and find out almost everything they need to know just my 2 cents |

A beginners section would be a great addition and wouldn't cost a thing to add. But I do understand the work involved as the mod for that section and keeping up with all the questions when the current senior members get tired of answering the same questions over and over....either way the newbie member will do what it takes to get the info that they want even if he/she has to search like everyone else's has done to this point. IMHO

A beginners section is probably not needed, but I would like to have a section where it answers the most asked questions(FAQ).
I wish to add also that we may be pro on one area and a beginner in another area so I don't know how are we going to define a beginner.
