Newbie

Hey everyone im new to this forum and would like to learn more about pigeons. I would like to set up a loft and buy some birds. I need some help/advice on what birds to start out with. I also have some quick questions...

1. Is owning Pigeons expensive?

2. How much would I have to spend to keep 4-6? (How many is recommended to start with )

3. Maintence?? Is there a lot of cleaning and work to do??

4. Do the birds land on your roofs and poop on your house and does it get messy?

5. What are some simple loft ideas or what are some other options/ways to keep birds??

Thanks a lot hopefully you guys can answer some of these

1. Not really but it can be to start. Feed is 23.00 a bag here and I got through about a bag every 3 weeks. Also medications, grit, and other supplements I would not call it expensive though, not for a small flock at least. I have about 26 birds.

2. I would start with a pair and make sure you like them before getting any more. 4-6 birds sounds fine to me and would be very inexpensive to feed and care for.

3. You need to feed the birds daily, change their water, and scrape up their droppings as with any animal feed, water, and pick up the poop. I wouldn't call it hard but if you can't see yourself doing it it won't be fair to the birds unless you make the commitment for their health.

4. The birds should not be lounging on your roof. That is why you fly them hungry so when they land they go back in the loft for feed. even if they did poop on you house you would never notice it. Unless you have 1000 birds living on the roof.

5. I have just recently been in one of our members Trees Gray new loft it is small. I think it was about 6'x4' and it housed 6 of her birds perfectly. She also had a large aviary so they could get outside and get fresh air and sunshine. That would be ideal if you only want a few pairs of birds.

Hey thanks a lot!! A few more questions...

1. What are the differnt types of birds and what are their purposes??

2. Do lofts need to be placed in any special area??

3. If I can't build my own loft what are other options to keep birds in?

Thank you everyone!

Well here answer this first. What do you want a pigeon for? To fly around and perform, to look pretty, or have any unusual behaviors or colors?

Lofts can be anywhere and can be very small or very large. As long as it meets the birds requirements. You could keep them in a cage but it would probably be best to get a single tame bird.

Umm im really not too sure what I want them for . That's why I would like to know what birds do what so maybe from that I can choose what seems the most interesting.

Im liking the idea of homer pigeons for just flying for fun. Maybe if I get more serious about it ill start doing competitions.

Is it possible to mix birds around?? Like say have a pair of homing and a pair of tumblers and a pair of tiplers??

Yes I would not advise mixing them though for breeding. Rollers and homers would be a good choice. Rollers spin in the air and are very easily settled to a new loft since they haven't got a strong homing ability.

Homers are fun as well. I have homers and show kings now.

Ok it looks like its time for another question!

Do I have to worry about pigeons attracting hawks and falcons that could possibly hurt or fly off with my dog??

My dog is a little yorkie thats about 7pounds or so...

We have a yorkie too, that weighs about 4 lbs. (KNOCK ON WOOD).....we've never had a hawk try to go after her, but then we don't have much of a hawk problem here AND our dogs aren't out in the yard unsupervised for very long. Long enough to go potty and that's it unless we're out there with them.

Ok thank you. Wouldn't want my moms precious baby getting scooped up by a hawk and having it be my fault, since I wanted pigeons

P.S. Lovebirds could you also take a look at what I left in the Loft forum and tell me what you think??

Thanks!
