Are they young birds. It best to train them at home first get them flying good around the house no need to take the any where as yet. Pull there feed. Then let them fly hungry and call them in with feed. Either shake the can get a whistle and blow it at each feeding They will remember the sound means feed time. And you should get on track.

Hi Ethan,

Although I'm no expert when it comes to training homing pigeons, I think you've got to establish more of a routine. You have to make the pigeons realize that you are their food source.

It's been suggested by many of the pros here that you should fly your birds hungry...before they are fed in the morning. Do you leave food at all the time during the day...do they eat too much at a time? If so, this could be one of your problems. In order to train the birds, they have to be hungry enough to want to do what is expected of them. You should only offer them food once in the morning and once in the afternoons and take away the dishes after about 15 minutes even if they are not finished eating.

A whistle or the rattle of a tin should be the signal that it's CHOW TIME. Make one of these sounds each and every time you're about to feed them. Then they will associate this sound with you and food.

Try these suggestions and let's see what the other experts have to say.

Training aside, if you can climb a tree and pick up your birds and take them home, you have a problem. I think you need to lock down your birds and take some droppings to a vet and have them checked. There is no way you should be able to get that close to your birds when they are out flying. If I was you, I would stop "training" immediately and get to the bottom of the real problem. And if they are sick, (it sounds like they are) the last thing you should be doing is depriving them of food.
