Pigeon Racing

I'd love to be able to get into Pigeon Racing, but I have no clue how it works, what is involved, or how to get started in it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Generally what kind of birds are Black Eagle Homers found to be? Are they expensive?

FYI: I live in Napa Valley, CA. That's about 60 minutes south-west of Sacramento, and about 40 minutes north of San Francisco.

Getting Started

Hello "Rabmag"

Welcome to the "Racing Section", now this is the section that seperates the men from the boys !

#1 Find a local club, I have a bias towards the AU, check out their site here:

http://www.pigeon.org/aboutau.htm

If you check out the bottom of the page, there is a link to find a club.

#2 Once you locate a club, contact some of their members, and ask for some help getting started

#3 Black Eagle Homers ? Black Diamonds ? Black Ludo's ? There are as many different strains of homers, as there are flavors of ice cream. In some cases, you better have a BIG check book. Best to find a mentor from #2 above, before you spend $10,000+ on some fancy stock.

Black eagles I believe became popular in the U.S in the end of the 70s and early 80s. They were called African black eagles back then. I had a few back in about 1982. Some people liked them well. I was not as pleased with them. But each there own. Warren gave some good advice on helping you go forward in getting into homers. In your area There should be a few clubs close. And take it slow check out what is flying well in your area. though I know several breeds that do well out there. Hope you get a start and I think you will enjoy the sport.
