First of all, you should ask your friend what his birds had when he gave them to you. Surely he knows if his birds had health problems.

Aside from that, you can waste a lot of time and money "guessing" what's wrong .. just take the birds to a good avian vet and find out.

Also check out http://www.jedds.com and go into the diseases section .. pick your symptoms and see what comes up. You can also do this at the Chevita site, but it is totally oriented to their treatments .. still great info ..

Hi Nusdogg,

These could also be completely normal sounds. Pigeons that are frightened, or scared in a new environment with new people will make a kind of grunting, honking noise as a warning. Do they do this when you approach them?

Also, depending on the exact age of the birds, they could be very young ones that are in the process of changing their voices from squeaks to coos and if they attempt to grunt or make a coo, it might sound like a honking kind of cough.

This may be a respiratory problem, and that is nothing to fool around with, get the birds to a good avian vet and get a proper dagnosis, as Terry said.
The proper diagnosis will get you the right medicine for the job, and that will save lots of time.
