Rattled by what I saw

I'm a newbie with a flock of white homers. Today, when I went to the loft I found one of the birds dead inside. The birds seem healthy and I used an all-in-one treatment on them a month ago. Is this unusual or just par for the course? Thanks.

That IS unusual and NOT par for the course. How long have you had the birds? Can you post any pictures? How are they acting? Are they young birds or older birds?
A dead bird could mean a million different things. Any chance that an animal could have gotten to them?

I have never found the all in one treatments to be especially effective and while I'm sure others will disagree with me, I think they are a waste of money.
Have your birds been vaccinated?
Can you tell us anymore about the circumstances? How old are the birds?

the birds are all under four months. the one that died had been on a one-mile training mission yesterday. it came back to the loft and was eating like crazy with all the rest.

i live in the missouri ozarks and hawks have been a big problem. I've lost a few to hawks over the past month.

I totally agree with you. Probablly the ONLY thing they're good for is for racing folks to use during race season for 2 or 3 days between races. Far as "curing" anything.............I sure don't put much faith in them and don't use them at all.

Well, I said it was unusual and it is, but it isn't unheard of. I guess "things" can happen to birds just like they do people or any other animal.
How are their droppings? We really need much more information to even start to try to help, if that's even possible.

How many birds do you have now? It's VERY VERY important to keep any new birds separated from the birds you have currently. I can't stress that enough. The new birds can give your birds things and your current birds, if they are sick, would just make the new ones sick.

Well, the temp. didn't have anything to do with what happened to the bird. The only thing I can suggest is to keep an eye on the other birds. If none of the others look sick, act sick and no more die, then maybe it was just "one of those things".......I had it happen to one time a couple of years ago. One bird died. I never knew why and no others got sick or anything.
With any luck, that's what has happened to you.
Pictures of you loft and birds would be great. Not that this has anything to do with the what happened, but how big is your loft?
I don't know you or anything about you, so not accusing you......just saying.......overcrowding is one of the worst things you can do to a pigeon.
So, please let us know how things go and welcome to the site by the way. You've found THE BEST web site for info on pigeons, IMO.

if you still have the body you could take it to an avian vet to evaluate...this may be a fluke, but I would inspect your other birds very carefully. make sure your feed has been stored with out any moisture, as mold and fungal probs. can affect their internal oragans and cause death in some instances.
