hmmmm... I dunno, I hope some of the real "experts" here like relofts or smithfamilylofts or relee or some of the other serious fliers / racers see this and respond. I'd like to hear the answer too...

Yes-Yes-Yes, We in the US many times would train that far or more everyday before the 1st race. I certainly do & most I know do. Course the Gas Prices are going up so high that we will have to start finding ways to road train less.. You probably should post these type questions on the Racing Pigeon part of this web site..... RacingI think practice makes prefect. Keep them flying. Then it will be second nature. Vary thier route too.

I was reading up on that a short while ago and it seems the racing blokes fly them a lot further than that up to 3 days before the race when they start with the feeding program etc.
I hope that I can also race in my first race in a while. My eggs seem to be taking forever. i am very impatient to get started with my first training exercises with my youngsters. And yes I should not be counting my chickens before they hatch. LOL |

It is also a good idea to do some training tosses with the other birds from other racers, who intend to race. This will make them comfortable around others birds, and once trained, keep them from going home with the otherbirds. Birdy mentioned this once.

Tossing the birds does 2 things. Helps hone up the homing ability and puts them in shape to race. Flying around the house gives them shape. But tossing puts them in the air over a distance. Very critical part of training. When birds have not been road trained. You should expect larger begining lose as they are up to distance.
