training question

So far I have let my dozen homing pigeons out twice on two beautiful sunny days. But today, day three, the sky is overcast, the sky is white instead of blue. Can I still let them out? At this point they rarely leave the loft roof. They are about 8 week old.

What about if it is misty rain? Can they be let out in that type of weather?

It is amazing to see these birds fly. We cant beleive how fast they fly over the house!

Thankyou

Hi Dawna,

Pigeons are a pleasure to have, and incredible flyers!

I'm glad everything is going well. Being that they are still new to this training I would keep them in if it is definitely going to rain, as they have a lot of learning to do at this point. A very light rain won't bother them especially if they have had a lot of baths and built up the powder in their feathers. If the forecast in your area looks bad and bad weather is imminent don't let them out.

Keep letting them out each day, weather permitting, as they get used to the routine they will start taking off for an hour or more and begin routing and taking mental pictures of where they in relation to their coop. One day they may go south, another day north, this will go on a few more times and then they will come home and do the usual circling around their coop and come in.

Two things I lookk for is the weather and hawks, before I let mine fly. This year the hawks have been bad around here.

Good luck to you and your birds!

Treesa
