training young birds

Im new to pigeons first year flyer. I have young homers trained out to 10 miles I have been told i can jump them to 15 then 25 and then 50 is this true? I have been taking them 1 mile at a time for about 4 to 5 tosses then moving out to another mile for 4 to 5 tosses I have not lost a bird on a toss yet even though I know it will happen sooner or later.

Hello WFL Lofts,

Welcome to Pigeon Talk. We have many members who are experienced racers, who I am sure, will be more than happy to help you out with good advice. Unfortunately, I am not one of them, but while you are waiting for answers, you may want to check out the "sticky" threads at the top of the page in the Racing Section. There are at least two or three threads outlining training methods and tips provided by some very experienced and knowledgeable members. Click on these threads and read them and they may give you some very good ideas.

Linda

Everyone you talk to will give you a different answer on this one. I would do a search on the web on training young birds. The birds should be fine from 10 to 15. I have jumped birds from 5 to 25 before. May not be the right thing to do, but the birds did fine. I am from the desert though. I can almost see the first race station from the top of the hill. We can see about 50 air miles. The top of the hill is one of my first tosses. My birds should be able to fly this 50 miles their first toss since they can see the hill that is a mile from the house. The AU has a pamplet on training young birds that give you some milages. I think they jump by 5 miles after the 10th mile. I also think they say something about doing 5, 10, 15 twice each. Your birds may be routing out to 10 miles or so just from the house.

Well Ive got them out 15 miles three times and they beat me home the last two tosses and fly around the house another 30 minutes or so until I blow the wistle for them to trap. I am going to go about 20 or 25 miles today and see what they do.

hello WFL loft and welcome to pigeon talk and with my pleasure to answer you ... The first point direction of your place with aloft and the wind , best thing the wind it must be reverse or opposite your pigeons direction fly, for (example ) the direction of the wind from north to south , your pigeons it necessary be fly from south to north in the direction this is the best way for treaning young pigeons and about the tosses the better one mile but many directions este north west and south after that jume to 5 miles 5 times the direction you wanted , after this steps , you have to dublecated .
10 miles hence 20 miles and hence 40 in this manner ... and so on.
This is my system and my way more than 7 years .
