Which type or breed?I have surfed the net as you see many variations of pigeon. I definatly have racers but look slightly different to those that are posted all over. I wish I had a digital camera so I could ask properly. I will paste a pic of what my pigeons do NOT look like and try and explain The beak is longer and the white on the nose (I forget what it is called) is a lot bigger and more broccoli like. The head is more pointed. Does this make sense, if someone can help me with a link to different varieties of racing birds I would be grateful.
The colours are also the same but mine stand a bit "taller" with more leg Last edited by Jiggs; 23rd August 2006 at 01:33 AM. |

Hi Jiggs,
I'm no authhority on the different varieties of pigeons, but your description of the cere,(the white part above the beak) sounds like it may be a Dragoon. One of our moderators, Terry, has some Dragoons...here is a picture of a white one, but they come in many colors..you can take a look and see if that's what yours looks like: http://www.rims.net/hpim0471.jpg Also, at the top of the opening page of this site, you can click on "Galleries," then click on "studio images" to see pictures of the many different varieties of pigeons...maybe doing this will help you in identifying your bird. I'm sure others will be along to help out. Linda |

I looked at the gallery - the closest I could come up with is the 5th one from the bottom show homers. close but not quite. If I have show homers are they slow? why call it a show homer. the gentleman whom I recieved mine from has winning stock. I will try and lend a camera quickly and take some pics. watch this space!

The bird looks like a show racer. Or a show racer cross. That is bred for show not racing. Show racers a largere thru breeding over the years then a regular racing homer. Crosses are a bit largere gettting and keeping show points for the racer. . These birds are not tested or trained to race. And would not be a good race prospect.

Hi Lin and all .. I have since been "educated" on the finer points of a Dragoon compared to elderly homers .. my three that I thought were Dragoons are actually quite old homers who have developed those enormous ceres and eye rings. The shape of a Dragoon's head is quite different once someone points it out to you.
