OK, cool it folks.

Glyn and Jazzman - the guy lost a whole lot of birds to an intruding animal. He's stating that as a fact, and asking a question about birds.

Just stating the obvious about what 'should' be the case without offering any positive input is not helpful in that situation. Heck, I've had times when I 'should' have done something different, but I don't have a crystal ball, so I just gotta live in reality.

John

Ya know. I'm really sorry for your loss. I really am. It's horrible when these things happen, but you are being very rude. The first person that said that "nothing should be able to get into your loft but you" said that before you mentioned that it actually got through the locked trap. And they were right. Usually, when something does get in, it's because we were careless. It happens. Sometimes, we try our best to cover every base, and it still happens. That just means that we didn't do enough. It is still on us. But calling people jack ass, and telling them to get bent isn't accomplishing anything. I know you're upset. I would be devastated. But if you are going to post, then you need to let people give input also. Even rodents can get through traps, so if it wasn't locked with a solid door, then you also ran that risk. A solid door is much safer. You can't be too careful. Maybe you should have given all the info to start with, and the answers would have been more helpful. JMO.

I have always wondered just what is around at night. I have thought of putting a web cam or something up. I probably wouldn't even want to know. I have heard of raccoons being very strong, but my gosh, are they strong enough to pull apart a trap? That's very unnerving. Seems like no matter how hard we try, it is impossible to keep them safe. I hate this.

Raccoons can chew thru 1/2 inch hardware wire so if you got that they can still get in.

Now everyone remember the number one rule, "If you can't say something nice, Shut up!!!!" At lease that was how Mom said it to us kids. LOL

Aaron, it was a raccoon, I was warned that they are very bad at killing once in the chicken house or pigeon loft. This raccoon now knows how to get in so you are going to have to trap him. Not sure of the law in your state but in Georgia we can get a permit but must kill all raccoons caught because of the diseases they carry.

I'm really sorry,
Tony

you can relocate it very far away, no need to kill it, as much as he may want to of course. also from before, it is just insensitive to bash someone when they are down, He knows what to do now and has learned from it, He did try to protect his birds by locking the trap, so neglegence is a moot point. just a sad thing that happened and it can happen to the best of us, and as far as his coments, lets at least here him in, it was a bad day, because that was a dosey. hope he can recoup, very nice offer he has there as well, as not many have squabs avalible now.

If they can still get in with the hardware cloth, then what else is there you can do to make them safe?

You know, one thought that I had that may be realevant here...

My loft is set up so that even if a predator gets in through the trap, they are caught in a coridor that runs the length of my racing loft. The birds are kept in seperate sections off of that coridor. Perhaps there is a way of constructing some sort of small room with a door that must be openned to let the birds into their living quarters but can be closed offering them another layer of protection.

Just a thought.

Dan, I have seen your loft and I would feel safe there. You built what many of us can only dream for. But a second door between trap and loft is a good idea. My loft is set up where I can do that, Thanks.

I'm so sorry to hear about your birds. It happened to me last December, but in my case it was Norway Rats that found some loose staples at the top of the flight cage. Its a devastating sight that I will never forget and don't want to happen again. I know exactly how you feel - I went from crying to anger and back to crying in split seconds. I'm in the process of building my new loft and hopefully an ant won't be able to get thru it!
