Those who really know will be along soon, I'm sure...but using physics alone....the bigger wing will move more air with less effort / fewer wing-beats. I would think this would be advantageous to a racing bird <shrugging shoulders>

Wellll.....you didn't ask about "racing your fav birds"... and, if they're your favorites....and birds do get lost when racing....maybe keep them home <shrugging shoulders...again> Of course, I'm sure there are some small wings that fly better/trap faster than some larger wings. Maybe you have one/some of those (but you still risk losing "some of your fav birds".

Big birds with smaller wings = Short distance..Why ?? They have to beat their wings more to fly, which = faster flight...But for a shorter duration of flight (Miles)...
The oposite is for long distance pigeons...Small to medium size, long wings, less wing beats, mean a little slower speed, but can fly alot longer duration, which = more (Miles)...Alamo

Hey James, why all the caps? It makes it look like you are shouting. My favorite bird is the one with the most personality and she loves to fly. Couldn't race her because she doen't trap well, she chooses flying over eating and will not trap until dark. But she is still my favorite and how I love watching her fly. Short wings, long wings? I say race them both and keep records, then you know which is better for which race.

James,If your flying Natural, which means your setting up the pairs to race with eggs in the nest, you want to mate the Short Distance pigeons to each other..That way you can rasie a baby from each pair if you wish...If you are going to fly widowhood, you still want to mate short distance to short distance..and the same for the long distance birds....They could be in the same section of the loft..If you have two sections,by all means keep them seperate...Distance pigeons need more rest then the sprinters..So you can train the sprinters, and keep them in top condition, without bothering the distance pigeons a whole lot....Good Luck......Alamo
