500 Racer Pigeons

I was called out last year to come get this pigeon in a very high garage and my husband and I did, after we finally caught it, I got it home and it had a band around it's leg so I got ahold of the guy and after he came for the bird which I found out it was only 5 months old that he retired because he owns 500 Racing Pigeons, he makes alot of money racing these birds and retired. This Pigeon i rescued was 3 miles from where it was suppose to be, it got confused in some bad weather. I never heard of 1 person having 500 birds before. I was amazed.

That is alot of pigeons! Wow!

I know someone with about 200 to 300. He has a building the size of a two story house, with real windows, for them.

I would love to hear more about this racer. Do you know the name of the owner?

Thanks for sharing.

yes he came and rescued it and took it back home. He said it was one of his best racers. I don't know the guys name, I have forgotten it, he gave me the creeps. When he was inside my house he was looking all around and carried himself where a women would get that nasty feeling in her gut to get him out of the house ASAP. I always go with my gut feeling and he was really weird and giving me that creepy feeling, didn't want to know anything more about him except I kept saying to myself " Take your bird and get the hell out of here"

Yikes! ...I don't blame you, I wouldn't want to remember him either....

There are all kinds of fanciers as there are different people in this world, so far I have met only the nice, decent kinds.

I hope he treats his pigeons well.

500 is quite a few ! I only know one guy who may have more then that. It really comes down to space, money and time. If I had an almost unlimited amount of space, and could hire people to work with the birds, and could devote fulltime to the project, perhaps I would own some huge colony. Right now, I have 16 pairs of breeders, not counting the babies, in three lofts, and that can be a handful at times. Interesting story.

He does have a small staff of 3 people whom help him out, but when he goes out of the state to race he has no one to help him. He has to hire people to come in and feed all his pigeons about 2 times a day. Too many for me too.

Whoa

Holy MOLEy that is a lot of pigeons! I only got my first pair a day or two ago! How on earth can someone feed that many, let alone house them?
