A friend named DollarA friend named Dollar
I had a young bird named Dollar he wernt much to look at white with eyes of black and one red feather on his back he sat the high perch in the sun next to the trap where he ruled in the loft with a quick hard wing slap . He was bred from old jet stream and cricket the hen one egg in that nest in early January back then i taught him to home on his wing and my prayer no matter how far out when i got home he was there He knew he was special and showed it in kind for when i came in the loft he danced for me in real time back and forth he drug his tail pirouette left and pirouette right he danced for me morning noon and night Now Dollar loved to fly and often set his wing to the sky from all points on the map the first home and always last to trap On a clear blue sky early one October dollar flew a wedding he had done it over and over He knew his way home just 8 miles out he would be ok I had no doubt When the sun set we were washed in night Old dollar didn’t show No where in sight The loft seemed a little different From that day on No one to dance for me now that dollar was gone I traveled the high road To the big bend in the river There sat a white bird on the high wire All fluffed up to stop a shiver I knew it was dollar I saw that day No time to stop I had to get on my way Another day on the high road I stopped by the wire Jumped out of my truck And threw some corn on the road by my tire I hollered at old dollar As I done in the past He swooped off the high wire And landed at last He pecked at the corn And looked me straight in the eye Gave a little shuffle Then began to fly He never came back Whenever I was there Tho I see him sometimes On the high wire or in the air Yeah dollar was different And he knew it in kind But I never really owned him He was just a friend of mine |
