A nice Greek storyA nice-ish story.
I support a charity "Greek Animal Rescue" which basically raises the plight of the many, many thousands of stray dogs and cats in Greece and the Greek Islands and the indifference that many Greek people have towards animals ( not all I would add as I know there are some lovely Greek animal loving people out there ) but this was a story about pigeons. There is a little old man called George Karoussos ( Greek) who takes care of 8-10 stray dogs by feeding them and making sure that if they are sick that get veterinary treatment but he also feeds others strays and pigeons. There are two squares he visits in Patras and he feeds he pigeons daily in both of these squares but the amazing thing about this is that the Town Hall in Patras gives George 120 Euros ( £ 80 or $ 140) a month for pigeon food!! How amazing is that? A Municipality giving money to encourage pigeons!! In a country that it is not always sympathetic to the stray dogs and cats!!I wish the idea could catch on here in the UK!! Good going George..... Tania |

That is so nice.
My grandfather loved pigeons and he rescued them since he was a little boy (he was greek). He had a room full of rescues (guess it is in my genes). I know many people are animal lovers in Greece and they do their best to keep the strays fed. A friend of ours took in six cats already from the street. It is the goverment that won't do a thing to help the situation. Patra is a tiny city and I guess the mayor loves pigeons. Thanks for sharing the story. Reti |
