Ducklings in the guest bathWhile out to dinner with friends I received a call from the dispatcher at the Light Rail facility that I work for. "Pleeeease Doc. you just have to rescue them---PLEEEEEASE". Well that is all it took from this old softy, and off I went. If that old Volvo had wings, it certainly did fly. When I arrived at the scene it was utter kaos. One of my Train operators refused to move the train loaded with passengers until I rescued all the ducklings. A previous train had struck and killed the hen who was in the middle of the trackway and all seven ducklings scattering hill and dale. I quickly managed to round them all up and deposit them safely into a crate for transport back to my home. After signaling the train to proceed I glanced at the passengers, all cheering at the rescue. They are wild Mallard ducklings and all are faring well. The picture is of the ducklings having a swim in the guestroom bath as I prepared their quarters.

What a great rescue! They are precious little beings and I am so sorry their mother was killed. You must be well known where you work for rescuing things.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME, Ptown!! FINE JOB! And a HUGE WING FIVE FROM MR. SQUEAKS TOO!
 I, too, am sorry to hear about mama duck...those babies are adorable! Once they are older, where will they be released?

How wonderful! Thank you for rescuing these orphans and sharing the picture. I'm so sorry the mother was killed. Please update us on their progress.

Pure cuteness!Aw, they're cute!
I get soft whenever I see puppies, kittens etc... I imagine everyone else here gets soft too, ya know Hope they do well this upcoming winter.

Great rescue, Ptown .. BUT .. don't leave them in the bathtub with water. They are too little to be waterproof and also too little to be able to regulate their body temp without Mom. You need to have them in a container that is 1/2 on and 1/2 off a heating pad or 1/2 on 1/2 off underneath a low wattage bulb (40 or 60 watts). Only provide drinking water in a small, shallow, non-tippable container .. food (NO BREAD) in another container. DO NOT let them get soaking wet and/or cold. Not trying to "horn" in here, but I've been doing ducklings for a lot of years now ..
Also, please use something that they can get traction on with their feet for a substrate .. don't want to get splayed legs. Old towel, T-shirt, sweatshirt .. This is a wonderful rescue and thank you for saving the ducklings. Sorry if you already know all this, but I got concerned with the ducklings in the bathtub. Ducklings in the guest bathI appretiate the concern TA Whatley, there are many a concerned citizen that would'nt know how to properly raise these gentle creatures. Rest assured they rcieved all you mentioned and more. I have been dedicated to rescue for most of my 53 years but have to admit not too many ducklings. There has always been an alternative rescuer to take them on. This time however I was on my own. It has been a month since the little ones have been in my charge and they have outgrown several enclosures, first being the brooder. I have an good friend who will take them on as they mature passed the delicate months. He will winter them in an enclsure and will see that they do not bond with humans. Next spring they will be released back into the wild.
