Jimmy's StoryHi Everyone...my name is Jan...on April 6th, 2005, I found a bird standing against the building of the manufacturing plant where I work. On closer inspection, this little guy seemed lethargic and weak so I wrapped him in my shirt and took him home, thinking that I'll give him seed and water, let him re-gain his strength then take him back so he can be with his family. He was kinda odd looking. Really at that time, I didn't know what type of bird he was...I thought he was too big for a baby, his beak was very unusual looking, he had these yellow hair-like thingies sticking out on top of his head and chest...also, I remember wondering, where in the heck is his tail..he certainly didn't have much of one. Anyway, I put him in my garage with water and the seed that I use for my backyard feeders, and left him alone,as he did seem a little stressed by my presence. After work everyday I'd take little Jimmy out side with me and we'd set on the patio step and just watch and listen to the sights and sounds of nature. He never went far from my side. And if I tried to put him in the middle of the yard, he'd run, that cute little pigeon run, right back to the steps. He'd let me pet him as we sat side by side... And, I Thanked God for this Precious Gift , no matter how temporary it might be. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into Months...Jimmy changed, and despite all of my ignorances, he grew into a healthy young adult. He became a good flyer and even flew home from a visit to my folk's house on two occasions...Amazing!!! He's had numerous opportunities to leave.....but, he chooses to stay. In fact, Lately, he doesn't want to leave the house...PERIOD ! I did put him outside on New years Day for Fresh Air and Exercise which turned out to be a near disaster because he was chased by a grey "pigeon-sized" hawk, in which, he must have out-manuvered, because he returned around 4 hours later, Unharmed! I , on the other hand, Suffered Greatly!!! So, you see, with the exception of the hawk experience, my story is uneventful, and does not contain any of the True Heroics that one reads daily on this Wonderful Site. The information I have gleaned by observing the contributions of countless people has given me the necessary basics I needed; as in Jimmy's case, and also the more advanced info for tackling the more challenging situations should the need ever present itself. Jimmy and I want to Thank You All, So Very Much for that ! Jan

Jan, that is one pigeon who knows where is the best place to be, and who to be with.
You may say your tale is uneventful, but it is one of caring for a bird who many people would have ignored, a bird which would not even have registered in their awareness. Well done ![]() John

Jimmy's one handsome looking cowpidgie there! After that harrowing hawk experience I wouldn’t risk letting your pride and joy back into the great outdoors. I'd love to see more pics of Jimmy, he's quite photogenic.

Pigeons are magic birds and this is a magic placeThey drop out of the sky and into your life and become your best friends, my two are my pride and joy and are vastly superior company than many people I've met over the years
That's a great little story Jan and you're right about this place and the people & birds here. This place is an example of what the Internet was intended to do, provide a medium where civilized people can communicate and exchange ideas and information.NAB :-) ![]() |

Wonderful story. That pink cowboy hat with the gray feathers is a great combination. So photogenic, I almost expect that pigeon to be trying to sell me something (dog food, dancing lessons, a used car, and I'd probably consider buying from that handsome pidge! (I come from Texas; guess I'm a sucker for anything goodlooking in a cowboy hat).

Jan, thanks for sharing your story....you may think it's uneventful, but believe me, it is a pleasure to read such a heartwarming success story, especially in light of the fact that there are so many emergencies, illnesses, injuries and tradgedies that we tend to hear about. I really enjoyed it, as well as the stunning picture of Jimmy in his cowboy hat! Great picture!

...and the little feather is one of Jimmy's own little downy feathers that just stuck on quite naturally. Oh yes, and Jimmy does have a big bag of organic pidgie fertilizer for sale...if you're interested.![]()

Organic fertilizer for saleHow much? I need to factor in shipping costs to Germany. Although my wife thinks our Wieteke produces enough for us. I suppose it would arouse the suspicions of a swarm of postal and customs inpectors.
Declared value: priceless. (How much is a laugh worth?) (Portion of my post removed for a differet thread). - Larry Last edited by Larry_Cologne; 5th February 2006 at 05:24 AM. |

Looks like Jimmy is ready for the Rodeo! If he's bronco busting then he's sure got the experience to handle any hawk that comes his way. (Glad he got a away). I love your story Jan. It reminds me of how I got my little Buddy. He had those little yellow pinfeathers too when I found him. He has grown on me and become a big part of my life in such a short time. Our pigeon friends really are endearing aren't they.
