Two Forgotten HerosHere is the story of two forgotten heros of 2 wars The first story is of CHER AMI AN Enghish BRED BIRD (NURP-18-615) this bird is credited with saving the"LOST BATTALION". This bird was attach to NEW YORK battalion of the77th Division. On OCTOBER 27,1918 the battalion had advanced too far ahead of its own lines at GRAND PRE" into enemy territory and was surrounded by the enemy.Cut off from support and in a sorry plight. All efforts to contact Division Headquarters had failed.Several pigeons were released with messages were unable to get trough the hail of gun fire.With only one bird left,CHER AMI was their last hope. Cher Ami was released as the bird rose through a barrage shells and bullets it was hit by shrapnel.With one leg shattered he continued the flight to his loft at headquarters at Rampont,with the message carrier still attach to the wounded leg .He also had been wounded in the brest.The "Lost Battalion" was saved................ Now for the second story of G.I.JOE (USA 43 SC 6390) he was on duty with the British Tenth Corps Headquarters in ITALY. When the 56th Infantry Division, asked for air support to soften the German held town of Colvi Vecchia This was on OCTCBER 18,1943. When the British troops broke through and took the town. G.I. JOE was sent with a LIFE-OR -DEATH FLIGHT to Division Headquarters to stop the flight of bombers that were getting ready for take off to bomb the town,thus saving the lives of the British troops. After the war on Novenber the 6,1946 he recieved the Dickin Medal this is a medal given to animals heros in England. He is the only non British animal to recieve this award. I should add that G.I. JOE was only 6 month old when he preformed his heroic deed.There is one other thing Cher AMI a British bird saved Americans OCT.27,1918 and G.I..JOE an AMERICAN bird saved ENGLISH lives 25 years later, Oct 18,1943 GEORGE
