2 aprox. 2 week old pij's parents not seen for 2 dayshi,
i have two baby pigeons on my balcony. I think they are two weeks old give or take a day or two. everything was going fine untill thursday when i noticed that the parents haven't been coming around. mamma use to be with the babies almost all the time. i check on them through out the day...in the morning and when i get home from work. but since thursday i haven't seen mom or dad. the babies are just sitting there. i don't know if this is normal or if something has happened to both parents???(today will be the 3rd day since i've seen them) I checked this morning at about 7 am and no sign of the parents...i had checked last night at about 10pm and no parents...is this normal? i don't want them to die. should i bring them inside? the temp. outside is about 13C right now(only 7:30am)...but it is usually somewhere between 22-25C during the day. If i do bring them inside how often do they eat? i work 9-5 monday through friday so i am gone from about 8-7ish. i am hoping mom and dad are still doing their job...that i am just misssing it. but i am worried. it's saturday today...so i will check on them more often. hopefully i will see the parents still checking in. please help....thanks |

Hi Focker,
thank you for your concern for those little babies. It is possible something happened to the parents, but hopefully not. After the babies reach two weeks of age the parents don't sit with the babies anymore all the time, but they do watch them from nearby and come to feed them. Maybe you will see them today. Also you can check the babies crops to make sure they are full. The crop is the area in front of the chest, below the neck. Please let us know what you find. Reti |

Hello and Welcome to pigeons.com
We appreciate your interest in the youngsters. Don't suppose you could put a video recorder in an unoticeable place so you can check the parents return, could you? Checking the crop, as Reti has said, may help put your mind at ease. It is just below the neck but above the breast. It should look a little like a bean bag, inflated, when they have been fed. At 2 weeks of age they eat 4 times a day. Hopefully the parents are feeding them, but if not, we will help you keep them fed. Keep us updated. |

...ok, so i just went out to see if i could feel the crop. i THINK i know what it is and it looked quite full to me. They have gotten so much bigger since i had seen them up so close last. I had picked one of them up a few times last week cause he kept coming out of his nest and was half way down the balcony...i was scared he would walk right off the edge. plus, when ever he was out other pigeons seemed to be attracted and mom would spend a lot of time and energy chasing them away. i've since put some thing along the bottom of the balcony so even if he does wander he won't walk off the edge.
anyway...the crop looked pretty inflated...felt slightly warm to the touch..and kinda squishy...does that sound about right? he was kinda puffing it out when he was backing up from me...i don't look at all like mom.. they are scared of me now...before it was like i wasnt even there...but now they kinda back up and the one that i was touching the crop was making a little "pop" noise at me which was oh so scary ...very cute. so i feel a bit better now...i hope what i am actually seeing and feeling is a crop full of food. i would REALLY like to see mom or dad...but i do feel better. thanks so much. i will keep you updated. if anyone else has any tips or advice feel free to reply or email me. thanks again. |

That's what a full crop should feel like. I guess mom and dad are feeding them. Still, keep on checking on them, please. Aren't they adorable when they think they scare you by puffing up and making ittle noises? LOL. Mom & dad did a good job in teaching them that humans are not ok. Reti |

Once you start to care, it is hard letting go.
Well, at least you can relax for the time being and know that their other "mom" is taking good care of them. ![]() |

well Mary-Kate and Ashley are certified flyers now a days. they still hang out on my balcony sometimes....
i was wondering what they do in the winter? i was thinking that i could maybe put out some sort of shelter for them....but i dunno how to go about doing that... what are the chances they would even use something if i put it out for them? any simple ideas? |

That is great news the babies are doing good and still hang out on your balcony.
Pigeons are fine in the winter as long as they have food, water and a shelter from winds, rain and heavy snowing. You can try putting a cardboard box on it's side for the winter, line it with old T-shirts or towels and they might take it up as shelter from the cold. You can put some food in front of it so they take notice and explore their new shelter. Reti |
