Baby Pigeon in the garden....

Hey guys,

Have found a baby pigeon in our garden - from the looks of the photos linked to from this site about 15-20 days old (has got a fair bit of adult plumage, but still a bit fluffy round the edges, and with a rounded beak). We left it alone for a while, but it's been there nearly two hours now - have put down some water for it. It's walking ok cause it's running away from us.

I guess the questions really are whether a pigeon this age is likely to be able to fly if it tries (our garden is completely fenced in), and whether it's likely to survive if we leave it alone....

Ta muchly,
Bubbs

HI Bubbs,

Are you in the UK? Could it be a wood pigeon or a collared dove that has fallen from the nest in the wind?

They would be able to run away, but not keep safe from predators or feed themselves.

Can you see the parent birds around?

Cynthia

Yup, in the UK, would guess it's a wood pigeon - looks too big to be a collared dove. Have been keeping an eye on the garden since we noticed it, and no sign of any parents (although there's usually a pair of pigeons around somewhere). Can't see anywhere in the immediate vicinity it could have come from - no suitable trees or bushes closer than a few gardens away - I can't see how it would've got into our garden unless it at least made an attempt at flying...

Baby wood pigeons can usually fly when they leave the nest and look a lot like their parents. That is why you so seldom see them.

Put it on a window sill for safety and if it is still there by nightfall it would be best if you took it in for the night , warmed it up first (eg by putting it on a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel) and once warm ensured that it was rehydrated (for this you mix a pint of warm water with half a tablespoon of glucose, or honey, or sugar) and half a teaspoon of salt. Dip the baby's beak in ti to encourage it to eat.

After a couple of hours you can feed it, there are several things you might have at home that would be suitable: You could moisturise day old wholemeal bread into pellets and pop them into his open beak, or do the same with moistened dog biscuits, or Readdy Brek and rusks. Or you could use defrosted peas and sweet corn.

In the daylight try putting it out of harm's way on a window sill and watching to see if the parents are looking after it. I remember one case where the parents recognised their baby through an open window two days after it had been taken indoors! Woodies are clever birds!

If you need help, please let us know where you are. We might know of a rescuer nearby.

Thanks Cynthia,

I'll keep an eye on it then and see if parents decide to turn up! We've got some grass seed down at the moment so our pair usually turn up every few hours...with a bit of luck they'll collect their missing one at the same time! If not we've got a few huge cardboard boxes lying about the place that could be turned into a pigeon home for the night! Thanks again,

Bubbs
