Baby Pigeon Rescued...help!

Hi,
Found a baby pigeon the day before yesterday being attacked by crows, small cut on his head but ok.
Took it home and it seemed fine, got most of his adult feathers i think and can flap its wings but cant fly.
I havnt seen it drink or eat so i gave it some warm water via syringe today. It now seems as though it is sleepy and is shaking its head, not sure what to do as its getting weaker and not putting up a fight when i catch him to give him water???
Not sure what to feed him, or if he will eat anything by himself?
Any help gratefully received

Thank you so much for helping this young pigeon. It is quite possible it is too young to know how to eat and drink on it's own. Please go to our Pigeon Daily Forum and then into Resources. There are a number of "Sticky" threads there that will assist you in caring for the bird.

It needs to be kept very warm and dry and it needs fluids before worrying about food. Have a look at the Resources and let us know if you have any questions.

If you could let us know where you are located, we may be able to find someone nearby to assist you with the young pigeon.

Thanks for taking the bird in. It is probably on the edge of being fed and self-feeding.

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~pi...nge_method.htm

shows a method we have used for feeding a pigeon who is not yet pecking seed. The mixture used could be Kaytee Exact for 'all baby birds', chick starter with warm water blended, even chicken flavor human baby food mix.

I would open the birds mouth and check if there is any sign of obstruction, like a yellowish substance in the mouth. This is canker, which can prevent birds eating.

If clear, you could also try with some peas and corn from a frozen vegetable pack (NOT tinned), thawed in warm water, and pop the food into his beak one at a time.

Providing him with 'rehydration solution' may help to stimulate his system a little. This is half a tablespoon of cane sugar or glucose powder, half a TEA spoon of salt, mixed into half a litre of water and administered lukewarm - just a few drops inside the beak.

Do keep us updated.

John

Hello and welcome to pigeons.com

Thank you for helping this youngster.

Be sure to stabilize the bird before giving it anything per the following thread:

http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/showthread.php?t=8822

When you do give the birds the rehydration flued be sure to drop the liquid behind the tongue.

Hi Pidwigdin,

Please consider to be applying an antibiotic cream or ointment on his injured head-top untill it is healed. My own choice in these matters is the commonly available at any Drug store shelf, of 'Neosporin'.

Too, please let us know where you are, as in what city and state anyway...

Lastly, if this is a truely young Pigeon, who will need to be fed for now, I can send you a bunch of info on how-to and what-to, if you would write to me in yur regular e-mail.

I am pdp1@earthlink.net

This is a rough draft of a longish missive which will one day appear more conveniently here once I have it tidied up.

Consider to keep the little one "warm" also, as say, having an electric Heating Pad in half of a box or cage and laying a white towell on it, so the cage or box bottom is also covered in the white towell...and so that the Bird may be on or off of the heating pad portion as it pleases.

Good luck with the little one...
