Crested Baby PigeonG'day
I am in desperate need of help. I found a pigeon on my childrens trampoline today, we saw it drop from the roof where two dead pigeons lay. Judging by a link i have found it is 12 days old. It barely moves and is boney. We have put it in a cardboard box with warm blankets and covered it up. I was wondering, this pigeon has a crest so i'm not sure if it is actually a pigeon. I'm in Australia so it may be a native species but ive never seen one before. What should i feed it?Thanks. Alex |

Hello and welcome to pigeons.com
Thank you for helping the youngster. Please get the bird set on a heating pad (on low, with soft towel between the pad and the bird), and stabilize the youngster per this thread: http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/showthread.php/t=8822 Can we get a picture to make sure it is a pigeon? Once the youngster is rehydrated, it will need baby bird formula fed to it by syringe or tube method. You can buy baby bird formula from a pet store, that specializes in birds, like Kaytee Exact or Harrisons baby bird formula. We have a resources section in the daily forum that has instructions, and supplies needed, on feeding youngsters and how often and how much. Also, we have several members in Australia, where abouts in Australia are you? Maybe they can suggest where to take the baby for assistance or where to get the feeding supplies. |

Believe it or not when I was in Australia with my husband from Adelaide and his parents I had to catch a crested pigeon out there and it had conjuctivitis we called a vet nearby and he said bring it in and someone would rehab it well we ended up doing this for 10 days of ointment in the eye. Over here just as the earlier post mentioned baby formula but we also do dried cat food with hot water added to it till it becomes mush then let it cool drain off excessive water and mix real good with a fork and feed smaller pieces at a time, if you can get a pic of a bird to see where the crop is located at you can see when the bird starts to get a full crop. Hope this helps the people on here are terrific so listen to them close as they won't steer you wrong or in the wrong direction. If you can call a nearby vet and ask them if they know of someone who does rehabbing near you.
Good Luck |

Hi Alex,
Make sure the Baby Pigeon is itself 'warm', as by letting it be on an electric Heating pad for some while...make sure it is warm and active before you try feeding it. These Birds do not make any body heat for themselves untill old enough, developed enough TO do so, so, 'warm' blankets mean nothing but no warmth for them, since they have none of their own TO insulate 'in' with padding or woolens. That being said...there are various particulars to the feeding of Baby or still quite young Pigeons, and if you like, I can e-mail you a kind of long ramble about it. It dicusses how ot make nutritious formula for them and how to feed them so they are happy and you are happy. If interested, write to me in my normal e-mail, from your normal e-mail and I will send a.s.a.p. I am pdp1@earthlink.net For now though, let him be in a medium cardboard box, have the box on it's side, and on the bottom of the box then, on what is in effect the 'bottom', have a heating pad set up so it does not cover the whole bottom, but has some room with no heating pad.... On this lay a single layer of soft Towell, and have the heating pad set to low or medium, depending on how your clime is. The Bird itself will benifit if it may be on something that is about our own body temperature. Drape an unbottoned button-front shirt over the top and open side, to the collar makes a little cave door top down low...and let him warm up for a couple hours and then if you wish, in the info I will send, it will tell you what to do from there as for communicating with him and offering water/electrolite, and formula in terms he will understand and respond to nicely. I have been meaning to re-write this 'care and feeding and houseing for logistically orphaned Baby Columbiformes' missive, but I still have not polished it up for the 'sticky' here...so, sorry it is still a little awkward like this. Good luck! I bet he is quite a little charmer...! Phil Las Vegas |
