Dove with greasy feathrs

Someone found a dove which looked like being soaking wet. It was easy to pick her up and the feathers are actually not wet, just look like it. They are more greasy.
Any ideas on this, what could be wrong and how to treat her for the feather problem?

Thank you.

Reti

Hi Reti,

I'm not sure what has happened to this bird, but if the feathers are greasy then perhaps a bath in dawn dishwashing liquid will help

Hi Reti,

Brad is right .. the bird needs a bath in Dawn Dishwashing Liquid .. the original Dawn .. not the Ultra or all the follow ons .. then rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, and rinse some more.

Reti, we've had several birds with grease or goop on them. We use Dawn as mentioned, bathing them several times, but make sure they get a rest in between baths and that they are kept on a heating pad because they get very cold. After we get them washed several times we use chinchilla dust (just like you're dusting them for mites) which will absorb the grease pretty good. Sometimes it will roll up in pea size portions when we wipe them down.

I am sorry to say, the dove passed away last night.
I have no clue what could have been wrong with her. We are heartbroken.
It is the second loss (the other one was a pigeon) in the past two days.

Reti,

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of the dove and the pigeon. It is never easy, especially when it comes so unexpected.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm so sorry about this Reti. We can't save them all, and sometimes the best we can do is just give them a safe place in which to spend their final days or hours. I know you know this and that it doesn't really make it any easier. Hang in there!

Thank you, Terry, Maggie and Brad.
It doesn't get easier. It is always sad when a little soul doesn't make it.
