Found baby pigeon Need placement assistance! My mom found a baby pigeon on Saturday during the rain storm here in Jackson Heights, NY (Queens). She brought it home and has kept it warm, well fed and watered. She wants to release it out but I told her not to since it obviously can't fly, especially having new tail feathers just forming. She obviously wants it gone.
Is there any hope for this lil bugger? Very sweet, very vocal and loves both baby bird mush and wild seed. Has no problem drinking water out of the cage bowl either. Very smart for such a young bird too. Please advise because time is of the essence and my mom has no patience even though she means very well. Thanks! Kay |

Please hang on to it until others can respond. If it can't fly, then it won't live if you set it free. Plus its getting cold. I do know there are some members in the NY area, so please just be patient. Thank you for helping him out. mindy

please ask her to not release the bird, hopefully someone will come on soon that is from your area or knows someone who is.
have you tried to call your local vet or shelters to see if they know of anyone in your area that rehabilitates pigeons?

Hi! Thanks for responding. I didn't ask her, I told her that she has to hold on to the lil bird until we get more info on finding it help. Hopefully someone will be able to take it soon. Right now, he/she is nice and cozy in a bird cage, in a nice warm room with a window etc. She put a nice plush towel in and it cuddles in it too. Thanks again!

Please go to the following site (it's located in the resources section of Pigeon Talk), and scroll down to the NY listings. Try to get in contact with somebody who can take the bird. You should look for individual rehabbers or rehabilitation groups, generally veterinarians will not rehabilitate a bird.

Many thanks!I will do that first thing in the morning. Seems mom is doing good with "Nemo" as she has named it. As she is constantly keeping his cage spotless, she has found that he doesn't like floors. She put it on the floor so he could stretch out a bit, still in a confined area and wouldn't you know he hopped over and decided to make her foot his resting spot and to stretch his wings out. She's trying not to handle him that much but hard to do when you want to keep the cage and all clean. Thanks again to everyone, you have all been very kind in helping and pointing the way!
