Found Pidge in Armmonk NY IB 01 8 07I found a brown and white pigeon with a tag reading IB 01 8 07. I don't know where he came from and can't find any info on his tag online. He appears healthy and I've built a coop and aviary for him. Me and my BF like him and have decided to keep him and get a friend for him if his owner doesn't turn up. I'm just curious to see if anyone knows where he might have come from and if his owner might be looking for him. If anyone knows where this bird may be from, what type of pigeon he may be (we think he may be a altenberg trumpeter, but he never really makes much noise) or how old he might be I would appreciate any info that you may be able to give me. I guess we're just curious about his origin more than anything.
Thanks! |

its hard to say how old it is but if the 07 is sideways to the other numbers then it was born in 2007 but if the 01 is sideways then it an 2001 bird , my guess would be 2007 thou .. as for a breed it looks like a roller to me but a side view would be more helpful .. now as far as where he came from that could be just about anywhere being that there are a ton of people that keep pigeons in all parts of NY but I would assume that he came from somewhere not far off and just got lost while out flying which could have been caused by any number of things , hawks , high winds ranged to far... rollers if it is a roller are not the best with thier homing abilites .. i say enjoy your new bird as that band number doesnt give alot of info to help find its way back to where it came from

Being found in NY, and those bright white eyes, it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be a Flight. A lot of people in NY fly those as a game. Everyone flies their flocks and you hope birds from someone else's flock join yours and come in at your loft. Then they either give the captured birds back, keep them, or sell them back to the owner or whoever wants them. So obviously Flights can easily get lost.

That's an unusually pretty bird you've got there. They love to perch on bricks. They also like a shelf to perch on at night...probably because a shelf resembles a building ledge.

The PidgeHe is a beauty isn't he! We just fell in love with him when we found him. He's a really smart bird too! It took a couple months for us to get materials and build a proper coop for him and couple trys to catch him as well. We watched a lot of Youtube pigeon videos trying to figure out what kind he is and the only one that looked like him was listed as a 'trumpeter'. I think I'll proboly check out the local pigeon show that's coming up to see if anyone there knows what he may be as well.
We did put a 'triangle perch' that we ordered from a pigeon supply co in his coop and he loves to stand on it, thanks for the brick tip, I guess that does make sense since they like to hang out in the city. Last edited by taylorr872; 5th October 2008 at 09:19 AM. |

If you can put a shelf all the way across one end of your coop, he will really love that. Eight inches wide would be adequate. Pigeons do prefer flat perches.
I hope you can find a companion soon because pigeons are very social. In the meantime, pick up a hand mirror and hang it in the coop so he can see himself. I buy the kind from the hair section of the store because they cost under $5. and have a hole through the handle which makes them easy to hang up.

I was planning to get a friend for our new bird at an upcoming pigeon show this weekend. I've read that you shouldn't purchase a bird that is over 5 weeks old- is this true? Will our bird pick on the new one if its smaller/ younger than him? Also we think its a 'he' as he never laid any eggs. We were just going to get a female friend and swap out the eggs with dummy eggs so they don't breed like crazy- does this sound right or should we be getting another male as his partner? We are sort of new to all the specifics of pigeon keeping so sorry of this is kind of a silly question. I guess I'll probobly be posting more soon in the 'pigeon keeping' section here for more info
. In the meantime we did pick up a book on the basics... |
