I have one guy that seems to be looking for a new home...Dear pigeon lovers,
Since a few days I have a beautiful white, fantail pigeon spending days and nights around my house. He is sleeping outside my bedroom window as I type this. He seems to be healthy and in good condition - he flies around, eats etc. He seems to be at home wih us and willing to stay. The problem is, I know nothing about pigeon care and we live out of Riga, Latvia - the temperatures here will be about -20C in the winter (and it is ugly and raining already). Added to that, we live about 400m from the coast - soon we will have winter storms starting etc. So, here are my basic questions, just for a good start: 1. How do I tame him? 2. How can I provide him shelter against the weather and teach him how to use it, while still giving him an ability to fly out at will? Any input is much appreciated. Hi Maciej. I'm glad you found us.
It sounds like the pigeon that has found you is someone's pet that doesn't know how to find it's way home. Fantails pigeons are show birds and don't do well on their own in the wild. You are right to be concerned, especially with cold weather approaching. Another concern besides, the weather, is that a white show pigeon is very vulnerable to predators. Have you tried opening the window or door to see if the pigeon will come inside?

Hi Charis,
Thank you for your answer. I have not tried to open the window to invite him inside yet but I will certainly do so in the next few days. He is still there, sleeping at the same place as last night. He shows no intention of flying away. I know my wife is feeding him when I am away in the office during the day but he is not coming too close to her. We will see how it goes. Would be nice if he stays with us... Regards, Maciej |

Thank you so much for your concern for this pigeon. Charis is right; he needs to be brought inside. Fantails don't fly well and are easy prey for hawks and other predators. Please try to catch him so you can protect him from predators and the elements. Fantails are docile and make wonderful pets, by the way.

Hey Graf0,
Wondering about the results with your fantail visitor? Did he ever come inside your home? If not, is he still resting by your window at night? Or do you see him during the day by the window. Just wondering if he's ill and may need some health care. If you guys don't want him as a pet, could you find somewhere to take him in your area to be safe? I wish you lived near Jersey, my Coco whose also a show bird may like him as a buddy. ??? I'm not sure how you get birds to become friends though. Just concerned about your visitor so if you get a chance to update us, please do so. A pic would be nice also. Thanks.
