Injured Pigeon Found in DC- Please help!

Hi all,

I have just found a wild pigeon in a parking lot. He was barely walking so I picked him up and put him in some bushes- away from other animals. 3 hours later I found him in the same spot with his head hanging low-- as if he were shy. I picked him up and he barely moved. He's clearly injured. I don't know where, but suspect its his neck. I have put him in a box with water and crackers on my balcony. In the morning I'm going to buy him some pigeon food and call some vets (that won't just put him to sleep). Can anyone tell me if they know what's wrong with him? Could his neck be injured? What should I do?
Thanks, Gabriela

Preferably he should be taken inside and given some heat either from a lamp or a heat pad.

Make a little donut out of a towel and sit him it it, if you can propping his neck up.

When he is warm and stable mix a pint of warm water with half a tablespoon of glucose, or if you haven't got that honey, or if you haven't got that sugar. Add half a teaspoon of salet. Help him drink this by Holding his head up gently and dipping his beak in the water. He needs to get about 7 mls into him, which is about one and a half teaspoons, but it is best if he drinks on his own as if you try to pour it into his mouth he could aspirate and drown.

Hopefully he will still be able to swallow.

Crackers won't temp him to eat if he is ill. Some unpopped popping corn might temp him. If he can't eat or won't eat on his own and can swallow then you will have to hand feed him soaked and squeezed dog biscuits, popping them in his mouth as demonstrated in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU1SO0ZJoow

I don't know what is wrong with him, it could be neurological damage or bruising, but the vet will very probably want to put him down just because he is a pigeon. If you can, please give him a chance to recover.

Cynthia

Hi Gabriela and welcome! Please do as Cynthia has suggested. Your little rescued pigeon needs a lot of warmth and caring tonight. We do have a resources list here: http://www.pigeon-life.net/prd.htm .. there are a few entries for your area of the country.

Please do keep us posted about this pigeon, and bless you for helping it .. you won't be sorry you did .. they are marvelous little beings.

Thanks for all your help. My pigeon (he's my pet now) woke up a little more active today. I'm going out to buy him some dog biscuits and will keep you updated. Thanks for the quick response-- it's great to know people still care about animals.

Hi Gabriela,

If you're going out anyway to buy stuff, you can also pick up some bird seed...bird seed is what they really eat. I think the soaked dog biscuits were brought up as emergency food that you might have on hand. Actually, some members have used dried dog food nuggets, soaked in water until puffy, then cut into tiny pieces to hand feed if a bird is not self feeding.

Good luck with him.....

Linda
