Please let us know the condition of the bird. According to your zip code and where the bird is from, unless it's injured, it should be able to make it home. It's only about 25 miles. However, if contained, please don't release until you check back here. Knowing the circumstances of how you came to have the bird and get it's band info will be of much help in knowing what to do about the bird. Well, DUH!!! me.............I just realized that the title of your thread is INJURED pigeon found............Sorry........so, just tell us what type of injury. Injured bird- conditionHello,
What looks to me like a grey city pigeon was milling around the driveway for the past couple days. Thought it was just attracted by my neighbors bird feeder, but they noticed it couldn't fly. Otherwise, it looks plump and healthy. Came out to leave today and tried to shoo the bird out of the driveway, when it went under the car and would not come out! Managed to get close enough to hold it and put it in a pet carrier. When I got a closer look, it seems there is some small injury/loss of feathers near the shoulder. He/she is eating wild bird seed and has water in the cage-- bowels are working! When I talked to the LRM contact person, he said there is a mtg tonight and he will ask people. So helpfully, someone will call soon. My question is what do I do if no one claims him? |

Well, if no one claims him, then there are others that you can contact. The AU would be the first. http://www.pigeon.org/index.html Their members that use the AU bands on their birds are responsible for them and this bird is so close to home, that I can't think of a good excuse NOT to come get the bird if that's what needs to be done. The fact that you've spoken to someone from the LRM club is a good sign. Believe me. Hopefully someone will get in touch with you later and make some arrangements to get the bird back home. It actually sounds like a hawk or cat might have had a go at this bird, but he got away. Whether the injury is causing him not to be able to fly or the fact that he may have been a few days without food is hard to tell without actually seeing the bird. As long as he's got food and water and he's safe, that's the most important thing for now. Please let us know if you need anything else. |

Hello,
I got a call from Keith, the secretary of the LRM club, yesteraday. He knew the owner, and came to get the bird last night. What a nice guy- he told me the birds were racing from Terra Haute to Baltimore, a 600 miles race. The little fellow made it w/in 20 miles of home! I'm glad he finally found his way back last night in the back of Keith's truck. |
