Is This a Baby DoveHello Everyone,
We're newbies here...on Thursday just found a baby dove....looks just like Anton's pic posted on April 20th 2007...same size as well. Couldn'd find a nest, or mom and being in Nevada the temp outside was over 105% and with it on the ground concerned a cat would get it or dehydrate without mom. So we brought it in. Been feeding it the Exact baby formula. When we first brought him in he was attempting flight and 'strong' but now he seems much weaker and don't know what to do! No visible injuries. Been trying to find someone local to take it in to get it to flying stage but to no avail since its a 'wild' bird. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! |

Thank you for the quick reply...I think the sooner we can get him to a rescue center/ person the better!
We're in NW Las Vegas area and willing to drive the little guy where needed. Just tucked him in for the evening and hoping his strength will be better in the morning! We look forward to your reply~ |

Thanks for taking care of this baby, and thanks to you, Phil, for taking over the care.
I hope he does very well.

Dear Phil,
Unfortunately it was not possible to bring the baby over last evening even knowing the urgency of the situaton. And, much to my dismay, little bird died in the night. I feel very bad about this and frustrated as I began trying to find someone to take him since last Friday and sorry it took me so long to find Pigeon talk. Thanks everyone for your help. Next time I think it best if I just put the bird [if not injured] back into the closest tree and hope that mom is nearby. |

Hi Dobbie,
Sorry to hear. You gave it a good try, and you are a good detective to have found Pigeon-Talk. Depending on the 'Baby', their species, and age...they can end up a long ways from mom-and-dad by determined waling or 'marching', and or, they can be ill, and in need of medical intervention/attention. Each one has to be regarded individually as for the best course of action. Anyway... Golly... Good try... Phil l v |

Thank you for your kind words...
Buried the baby ... of course...now I'm seeing what I believe to be its mom...she's been hanging about ...I feel so bad...again...baby would've been better if I put it in the tree nearby...and at least watched it from afar to see what happened before trying to be super -interferring- human and bringing it in the house. Hard lesson....as you say...each bird is different... Thank you once again and glad to know you folks are out there taking care of these creatures!! |

If you don't mind me asking...had the Baby made any poops which had 'yellow' urates or yellow thin liquid?
'Canker' is quite common here, and can occur in Babys as well as adults, and in Babys or older Birds, it tends to be fatal if not treated and cured in time... And 'yellow' watery ' Water Color Paint' sort of urates are associated with it here in the Valley. Dove Babys normally occur two to a clutch...also, just so you know... Hello...
Let's see...poops of course seemed normal when first took bird in...after began the EXACT formula the stools slowed down in frequency but still going. Seemed to change color to green but went back to darkish brown with the white [urate I believe?] BUT the urine stained the cloth yellow. Of course since I am uneducated with birds I attributed it to the Exact formula as it was nearly the same color yellow. Good to know about the possible second hatchling...because I keep seeing mom now and she hangs about...must know her baby was here...ugh! ![]() |

Hi dobie,
There are of course many differint scenarios which can result in an apparently Orphan Baby or youngster. One of these, is that if the parents sense an impending illness, they will stop feeding the Baby, and or the Baby ends up out of the Nest however so, and the Baby, if old enough, can end up 'marching' long distances trying to find someone to feed them, or, whatever their reasoning is, and when we find them, they might not be anywhere near where their Nest or Parents are/were... And, they might be pre-symptomatic or in early and subtle symptoms of an illness, which will develop further unless treated. So, every situation has the potential for being different, as for what is appropriate for us to do when finding a Baby or Youngster Dove or Pigeon or other Bird. Ideally, a healthy Baby or Youngster should be put back into their Nest, or ba into whatever situation is right for theor speies at their age, if possible. If they are ill or impendingly symptomatic, then returning them to their Nest or other situation, if we can even find it for sure, would not help them, since their parents would reject them sensing the illness's presence. Anyway...every situation has to be looked at individually, and this is not easy to do..! Since one pretty well has guess 'right' and or to keep the Baby or Youngster several days to see if signs of illness are developing, or not, to say if it is healthy, to be able to be returned. Now, of course, in situations where we see a Nest has been disturbed and the Babys fallen out, probably all was well other than the Nest getting damaged by wind or Animals or whatever...but usually, all we have to go on, is an isolated, seemingly solitary Baby or Youngster, and we have no way to now what the history is...or what is going on with it. So, please do not fault yourself in any way for your kind efforts and intervention. These are not 'easy' calls to make. Phil l v Last edited by pdpbison; 21st August 2008 at 05:19 PM. |
