Larry has a vet appt.....at 9:45
so can anyone tell me what I need to know at the vet.... and thank you for the bathroom idea. I am going to move Larry into the main house and into a bathroom.... I have some soldering to do today and then it will be done for a while..... so I am hoping that I can move larry.... finish up my finishing work downstairs.... about 15 minutes of soldering and then move him back into the animal room we have set up ....down in the basement.... I am going out to buy some pigeon food this morning... and get him some new bowls..... I guess that with all of your help I am feeling a bit less panicked than I was yesterday..... with the vet appt. and knowing he is healthy then the antibiotic I feel like we can keep Larry here for a while..... How long to pigeons live.... ???? oh and I will try and get larrys band information. S

Don't know which way you're going to get this since it's an hour from appointment time so I'll email and PM both. The biggest theoretical worry, as we've said, is Pasteurella, which usually would start showing by now. However, that's one you treat for first and ask questions later when it comes to birds. That is, it's usually treated preventatively instead of waiting for symptoms as the onset of symptoms can come pretty close to being a death sentence without IMMEDIATE medication.
Other things the doc can do is a fecal float, looking for coccidia and worms. It's impossible to say what life this poor bird has had between his days in his home loft and now. There's only a million other things but that's what the vet went to school for. Pidgey |

Hi Shalva
I enjoyed your site so much. It has a lot of wonderful pictures and stories. The retreivers are gorgeous. I was particularly touched by Jim's story. I know you miss him terribly. Emily and Oliver in the boat brought back good memories for me. We had a miniature pinscher for 17 years and she went everywhere with us. Loved to go fishing and would stay out all day with us. Your little Janet is so cute. Know you're looking forward to getting her this spring. And Bhakti - what a gorgeous bird. We babysat a cockatoo a few times and they are endearing. Thanks, Maggie |

A little late on suggestions for the vet, hope you'll let us know how all goes there. The basement should be fine after it's had a chance to air out from the soldering. If you have a fan to help move the air around, that's even better. If you can add one tablespoon of raw (preferably) apple cider vinegar to a gallon of water and use this for the drinking water two-three times a week in rotation w/vitamins, etc., it's helpful in keeping things in check for the pij. Pigeons can live a long time, especially in a non-feral setting where cared for as a pet or in a loft. There's probably a range here, but I've read twenty years and longer. Pretty intelligent birds, and do make great pets. fp |

Hi S,
How will the Basement be aired out? Is it Zink Chloride? The flux you use? Best wishes... Phil Las Vegas |

Hi again Shalva,
It's hard keeping up with you Steph! With three threads going all at once and all. I want to talk to you about Probiotics if you don't mind. If you will be using an antibiotic for Larry you will want to also take action to ensure and maintain good gut bacteria. Antibiotics can wipe out everything, both good and bad and the outcome can bring on very serious problems like candida and other yeast outbreaks. The advice you have already been given about using Apple Cider Vinegar is very good advice for sure to keep things in balance. I would also pick up some Lactobaccillus Acidopholus from a health food store if you can. This comes in capsule form if you are not familiar with it. I think I can safely say that without exception, every one of the main contributors here on this site including me use a Probiotic of one form or another to help maintain the good flora of their birds gut. It really is that important especially when an antibiotic comes into play. I too am puzzled why pigeons suffer so much from gut and crop outbreaks of yeast but they do so I don't question it too much anymore. Perhaps one of the long term members will step in and tell us why so we will both know. I would certainly appreciate the info too. Anyway, Acidopholus is easy to administer along with food. Just glisten your birds seed with a little vegetable oil and then mix in the contents of one capsule each day especially during the course of giving an antibiotic. Because probiotics are live cells you need to add it new to the mix each day. Sorry if I am rambling on too much. It is important to mention though and you are doing such a great job of it all, I want to help in my own way. Try the search function of this site for more info on Probiotics. There are literally hundreds of references to it. It's that important. And keep up the great work. I am a fan of yours! Cameron |

I have acidopholus here already as I give it to my dogs so I will get him started with that tomm. he is on the clavamox so hopefully that will help any infection that has started and I agree about the acidopholus ..... it is good to know that I can give it to him without worry......
I am doing my best so all of these suggestions are greatly appreciated. S

in the future what I would like to do is take him to the vet for a real check up and then move him into Bhakti's room (the cockatoo) and then he can live in Bhaktis room until he is ready to go to Daryls. S
