Janice, I'm so sorry you have lost your little roller hen. I know how upsetting that is because it happened to me. Hawks are a big threat, especially at this time of year, and unfortunately it's quite possible a hawk could have taken her. Rollers are easy pickings for hawks because of the way the fly and the fact that they aren't as fast as homers or even feral pigeons. Don't give up yet, though. I've had lost rollers turn up as long as six days later. If a hawk spooked her it's possible she flew far away to escape him and had trouble finding her way back--this has happened to our rollers. If she does make it back, I recommend you find a way to pen her in, at least for the winter.

Hi Janice,

I'm so sorry to hear your roller is missing. Sounds like she has a wonderful home with you. It is very hard to deal with when they are misssing, and hard also on their pigeon 'friends" left behind.

The hawks are starting to migrate this year, so they are around more. Hawks have been really bad in our area, so I don't allow my Homers free play time outside, and no more unsupervised flights. They go out to fly and then stay in the rest of the day.

I'll be sending positive thoughts that your roller has only been scared off, and hopefully is still coming home.

Hi Jancie,

I'm so sorry that Magic hasn't returned home, I know how much you and pij miss her.

As time goes by perhaps you and pij might want to get another hen, perhaps that will fill the lonliness.
