Notes on TomHi Everyone
Just thought I'd post an update on Tom's rehab progress. His new feathers are growing in furiously. Everyday they are longer. The big flight feathers are about 2 1/2 inches long already. When he flexes his wing we can see about 30 feathers coming in. He really did lose a lot of them. I see a section of the wing tip infront of where the big flight feathers come in along the edge that is still without feathers. I don't know if this fleshy part is normal or if feathers should also be coming in here. We'll wait and see. He sure is starting to show his preference for food. Loves, LOVES, did I say loves? Forbidden black rice. I've been giving him different grains as treats from my pantry. ;-) He's got expensive tastes. He like Orville Redenbachers popcorn too. He is no longer keen on the pigeon feed (pellets) I'd gotten from a neighbour. He appears to prefer going hungery, hoping I'll give him something more delectable. While he'll eat black rice out of our fingers through the wire, putting my hand into his cage for any reason generally invites a stern pecking. And if we feed him something other than black rice with our fingers, he'll go for our fingers instead. Me thinks he has a strong opinion. ;-) The black rice colours his poops deep purple. Too funny. We have heard him cooing periodically in the last week. Today for the first time while I was visiting him. He also made a more throaty sound. Anyone understand pigeon? Annette |

I've got one that perches by the stairway up to my loft. He grunts at me every time I go by him, whether up or down. I can get my face four inches from him and grunt back. Then he answers. Then me. It can go on for quite awhile. Never figured out whether it was "Howdy!" or "Git!" but we've been at it for years. Personally, I like to think it's the greeting form because I once had to treat him for a broken leg and he spent a week on our kitchen counter in a basket.

Hi Annette...
Ooooo! Good to hear...! Black Rice huh? I will have to get some and see what mine think of it... Yours might also like, r-e-a-l-l-y like, or LOVE the White Safflower Seeds, small, whole, raw, people-grade Peanuts...Canadian or other dried Peas...the odd dash of Fennel Seeds...as well... Post some pics...! I wanna see all them new Feathers! Too, when wishing to reach into his Cage, always pause, and ask first, saying "May I please enter your House? I wish to renew your Seeds and Water...! " or the likes, and chances are, he will stand there, merely looking stern...and let you do it...and do it s-l-o-w-l-y, of course, not too slowly, but slowish, anyway... I know it makes a BIG difference when I ask, or when I do not ask...! I can bbrush against their chest doing it and no pecks or grunts or wind slaps...but if I do not ask first...look out! Pidgey One of my life rules is, "If I'm going to missinterpret something, you bet I'm going to do so in my favour." I support your interpretation, ;-) Annette |

Hi Phil
>Yours might also like, r-e-a-l-l-y like, or LOVE the White Safflower Seeds, small, whole, raw, people-grade Peanuts...Canadian or other dried Peas...the odd dash of Fennel Seeds...as well... I'll try those. Must keep this one amused. We're upgrading his name from 'Tom' to "Sir Tom." ;-) >Post some pics...! I wanna see all them new Feathers! I'll get some tomorrow, it's too dark now and today was a busy day. I should know better than to post info like that without including a pic. Thanks, I'll try that. Of course if I have black rice in my hand, he lets me in but is frantic to get at it. Gets a little crowded at the door. ;-) Thanks again everyone for holding my hand through our first week with Tom, Your assistance has been invaluable to both Tom and us mammals. Annette |
