pigeon found in FloridaA pigeon found me 2 days ago as I was bathing my horse. It flew down for a drink and I noticed it was limping on it's left leg. No band. I can't really tell what the problem with the leg is. It can fly but doesn't go too far, has been eating and drinking. I can get close, he seems very friendly but I can't catch him. Right now he's roosting in my barn but I do worry as there are quite a few hawks here. I'd like to find his owner but wouldn't mind keeping him if I can't. Any help would be appreciated! thanks.

Well, you might try rigging up a simple box trap and catching him. That's about as simple as it sounds: you prop a large box up on a stick with a string tied around it long enough for you to get back far enough that you won't spook the pigeon that you're trying to catch. You put some seeds under the box and around it (but not too many at a time) so that he eventually walks under the box to eat the ones there. When he gets under it you simply pull the stick out and the box comes down. Getting the bird out from under the box without it getting away can be done with a blanket over you and the box or something like that.

You can get the bird under the box, if he has no other source of food, that is important.
