Pigeon help needed in Philadelphia

Hi Everyone

One of our Starling Talk members in downtown Philadelphia has brought in a pigeon she found in the street - badly scalped and one eye injured. The bird is alert but docile, she has him in a cage with food and water. The bird is not flying, but she can't find any wing injuries. I've spoken with Terry who suggested cleaning the scalp with dilute Betadine and putting some antibiotic cream on it, and I've passed along that info. Jeanne works full time in downtown Philly, doesn't drive, and there's no avian vet available.

Are any of you in the Philadelphia area, or do you know anyone there who could take this bird? Any help would be much appreciated.

She has posted to 911 Pigeon Alert.

Ronni

hi ronni,

Clean with Saline, if it really in fact needs cleaning at all...and unless there is conspicuous foreign matter to clean, I myself would not clean it all, or, at most, I would just gently sluice tepid Saline Solution, and a Sterile saline solution is easily made by bioling say a Quart of Water, with four Tablespoons of common Salt dissolved in it, let it cool to body temp, then use.

The skin 'flaps' should be sutured a.s.a.p. before they shrink and dry out...

If that is not possible, what I would so, is maneuver the torn skin sections ( if they are present, maneuver them) back as best as is possible with clean fingers, and liberally apply 'Neosporin' to the whole, which will act both as a topical antibiotic, and, will aid in keeping it all moist...

Neosporin will also do for the Eye ( put a little dab on a Q-Tip and 'roll' it on just slightly above the Eye, and it will melt and work it's way down on it's own ) unless you have any actual official 'Antibiotic Eye Ointment', in which case of course, use that.

Any open-late Drug store will have 'Neosporin' over the counter, in the isles, as will most any Grocery Store.

One could also gently tape around and over this, to help keep the torn skin pleces put...'micropore' Tape sold at general medical supply places would be best...scotch tape, would do...

Make sure he is hydrated and offer tepid Electrolytes often ( a pinch of Salt, and one of Sugar, dissolved in a small glass of Water...)

See my thread about 'Lap Towell Cave' and do that for a while, to comfort him and get him gently to drink.

Have him on a white towell over night, and count and evaluate the poops in the morning...

Keep him "warm" so he is for sure in an immediate environ which is about body temperature...a Heating Pad under the Towell will do well, test by pressing the underside of your wrist into it for 30 seconds to see if it same as your own body temp or a little more is fine too...and drape the Cage all round...

Have her make some decent images and you can post them.

Good luck...!

Phil

Here's a couple of threads about the same bird that illustrate the healing process and a lotta' discussion about this kind of thing:

Phil and Pidgey, thanks so much for the quick replies. I've posted a link to this thread on ST so Jeanne can read your advice.

MaryAnn will be travelling through Philadelphia on Saturday on her way north, and will stop in to help Jeanne with the bird. In the meantime, thank you for the care info, hopefully it will allow her to keep the bird stable and start him healing.

Best of the season to you all!
Hugs, Ronni

Just thought I'd let you know that the little pigeon didn't make it, sadly it passed away this afternoon. It had vomited a couple of times, and Terry thought it could possibly have ingested something toxic.

Well, I'm sorry he didn't make it. It's likely that the injury occurred because he was too sick to fight back or get away from his attackers.

Sorry to hear the bad news Ronni

You may want to pass along this information anyway -- for future use. Both of these vets are American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, Certified in Avian Practice.

Philadelphia, PA - Evelyn Ivey - 215-573-4368
Philadelphia, PA - Karen Rosenthal (U of Penn) - 215-573-8565

http://www.birdsnways.com/articles/abvpvets.htm provides a list by state.
